What are the secrets to the C2 coupe headliner re-installation? It seems that the new Al Knoch headliner is too wide (I know that is very unlikely).

I have "all" the window mouldings off, including the sides above the doors. Does the headliner go in first, then the side mouldings?

Like I said, it seems too wide. :confused

Step-by-step would be appreciated. Thanks.

If I recall, we started at the front and worked our way around to the rear. Like you , we had all the mouldings off (fronts, mirror, visors, etc). Last thing in was the halopanel (well maybe the visors). Right now my halo panel is out and the liner is being held up by the two side pieces. I could snap a pic of the rear area if that would be of any use to you.

Will send some info (e-mail) gleaned from the web also.
Looks like it's really moving along!!!!

Short answer, yes headliner before the side pieces. Ours (Al Knoch also) fit OK.

Man, it sure looks too large. Was yours "difficult" to pop in place?
While doing the '67 I did a few years ago, we used two people to do it. If I remember right it does "fill" the area but it was not too big.

I could come over wed evening if you need a hand.....

Let me know

Just measured the rear edge of the headliner in the 65. It's 35" side to side. It droops down about 1" in the middle since the halo panel is not there to support it. Don't know how much different a 67 might be due to the pre-molded visor recesses. I suspect the rear dimensions are probably similar. It pretty much hangs bewteen the two side trim pieces and is locked in pretty good in the front trim areas. It went in easily with no forcing.

Good luck!

I installed the Al Knoch headliner in my 65 coupe about 6 months ago. Fit well. Even left the old headliner in place for sound insulation. Was able to get it in by myself. Took all mouldings out first, and put back one at a time, gradually fastening the headliner. Good Luck.

The problem appears to be in the front corners. Along the sides, the width is correct, but up front at those corners it appears to be close to an inch too wide.

I have all mouldings off, halo panel off. The front of the headliner is "too wide".

I'm going to have a couple of other folks look at it. I'm so wacked after working with literally hundreds of parts and pieces over the past weeks that I'm probably seeing double. :crazy

Thanks for the advice.

soppeng,

I neglected to welcome you to CAC after your post last night. It was so late for me, that I should have been in bed instead of on CAC.....just like tonight. :L

Well, three of us spent lots of time this evening trying to put the headliner to bed and we've come to the conclusion that some trimming is required at the center-clip area of both side mouldings.

Without trimming, the material simply buckles too much and looks real bad.

It won't take much, I think, but I'm gonna have to cut a notch.

For those who've never had the side mouldings off, the center clips on each moulding actually fit up into a slit above the moulding -- roughly centerpoint.

The headliner is in and I confess to having lost some faith in Al Knoch.

It was definitely too wide. The only way it would fit was to cut the plastic backing 1/4" off the entire side-edge and 1/2" at the side clips. Even then, the material is still bunching a bit at the clips, but I'll leave it to see if I can work it out over time.

This headliner cost me over $400.00 Canadian and I shouldn't have had to cut it to fit. :eyerole And, I sure was reluctant to start cutting. Three of us spent well over 6 hours (over a few days) trying to figure this out. I ended up getting steamed and just started cutting. THEN, it fit.

Big headache.......big disappointment......but it looks good.
