C2 power steering

I am having a problem with a very recent install of
power steering maybe someone has a solution to this.
I can get the valve to balance left to right, none of the
hoses appear kinked. When turning to the right the
system appears to work correctly. When turning left
it appears to work correctly until getting near left hand
lock it then moves swiftly to the stop position and is hard to pull back from the left lock position. Once pulled
back from that position it appears to work correctly.
Does anyone have thoughts on this ?
Any suggestions welcomed

Sounds like a defective control valve.

Are you sure the steering box is centered (lock to lock) when the valve is centering the front wheels to be straight ahead? I have heard of some problems with a steering box that is not centered.

How does one check for this? I know that the valve will control
movement to what would be none at the straight ahead position
for the wheels.

I know this is an old thread, but I'm curious if there was any resolution as I am having this EXACT problem on a '64.

Is your power steering new to the car?
I will have to recheck my car after a new starter and battery
I have been busy with other issues.
I have had several thoughts I might share.
I have slightly larger tires than stock, could there be a clearance issue?
If I position a stop to decrease the amount of travel in the problem
direction does it make the problem disappear?

My Dad bought the car about 5 years ago, he changed the control valve a few years ago (it was leaking) but he never really drove it before. I just put a reman pump on it (also was leaking) but the problem didn't change.

I know this is an old thread, but on my car it was the control valve. I rebuilt it myself - there is a small piston that slides from side to side from steering input inside the control valve and mine was getting stuck when pushed to the left.

Thank you for the information. I carefully adjusted the balance control valve. with the rod connected and wheels off the ground.
This seemed to take care of almost all of the overtravel problem. Still the control valve could have a problem. The car is drivable
now.

Just remember that, since the C2/C3 power steering system is a "linkage assist" design, "centering" the steering and "balancing" the control valve are two separate operations.

You center the steering box then adjust the tie rod lengths and so that the front wheels wheels point ahead. Optional but suggested at this point is front and rear alignments.

Once you have the steering centered, then you balance the control valve.

After you do those operations, if the steering still behaves like that, it's likely the control valve is defective.
