I think I've been "Bubba'd".... I've got a 64 which originally did not come with sidepipes. When I bought the car, the sidepipes were already installed, but I've noticed something not quite correct.

The pass side exhaust manifold should have a heat riser valve, or spacer, I believe between the manifold and the pipe. The pass side pipe on mine has none. It all seems to fit correctly with no interference issues, just wondering what it should be. The sidepipes still have what's left of a GM tag stuck to them, so I don't think they were aftermarket.

Also, didn't the exhaust donuts have a metal sleeve in them? If so, where would I find these. Mine had none. 2 1/2" manifolds.

Thanks

The aftermarket pipes that I got from Allens did not require the FI spacer or Heat riser. I think my father's 66 with GM pipes does not have the spacer either... No clearance issues or problems noted... As for the donuts I'm running the steel ones vs the asbesto's type. The steel ones will not blow out or get burnt up.. I got them at Car Quest you can get the metal sleeve there too or they have them at Zip or any of the other parts houses.... Dave....

I also have the Allen 2.5" sidepipes. I can not find studs long enough to retain the heat riser valve so I have left it off. It is only to speed warmup in cold weather anyway.

I talked to the Allen rep. at the vettefest in Chicago. He said he has heard of this before and he did not know where to find studs of the correct length.

I have had lots of problems with the pipes loosening. The brass nuts definitely do not work. I have gone to doubling up (jamnut) with 2 stainles nuts. Better now but they still loosen occasionally.

I'm not running the heat riser but why not just get you some allthread in SS and cut to the length that you need then double nut it then... Dave...

I have considered it but I like the look and serviceability with the hex end.

I have the heat riser in mine....but with the shutter in it removed. However the spacer is there. 2,5" manifolds and original GM pipes on a 64.

I bought new bolts and studs from LIC. The studs for the right manifold are very long. That's what got me thinking about the existing setup.

I'll have to play with it a bit. If I put the heat riser and spacer back in, it may drop the pipe that much lower (about 1 1/2" I think). I'm trying to maintain good ground clearance.
