I deal with a lot of salvage cars in my line of work... and I run across a lot of C3's with engine burns.
I would have to say the 92-96 MAZDA RX7 with its rats nest of wires ranks #1.
But the C3 has to be #2.

Does anyone know if there is a weakness in the factory wiring harness, or other problems to cause this?

Excessive under hood heat is the problem. The wiring takes a beating and shorts out. Rubber fuel lines from the fuel pump to the carb are another sure fire.

Any remedy to this?
Aside from getting a cowl induction hood or something similar to that.
Silicon hoses??? Braided fuel lines???

Ive spent too much time & money on my 79 just to watch it catch on fire one day

These are OLD cars - wiring and rubber hoses 20+ years old are all suspect, especially when a succession of potentially-Bubba owners have worked on them and/or butchered the wiring to install all manner of add-ons. Check the wiring, make sure it's routed and clipped properly away from sources of heat and abrasion, and keep an all-steel fuel system from the fuel pump to the carburetor.

I keep all of my wiring in the factory style plastic looms to protect them somewhat from heat. Your local auto parts store has the stuff in packaged rolls.
As JohnZ said, only steel fuel lines from the pump to the carb.

Any suggestions on this steel fuel system.
I am waiting for my new EDELBROCK 2101 Intake Manifold...
so I might as well clean up under the hood while Im at it.

I put in a batt. switch on my 69. makes it hard to steal too.
