Three weeks ago or so I started with doing the mechanicl stuff on the C4 I picked up. In past posts I mentioned I had to do a clutch. As I said before I think they built the car around the motor and trans. It's done though...I'm not looking to do another real soon that's for sure:crazy. I also had to pull the rear end cover off to reseal it. The rear end was leaking pretty good. It was not as bad as doing the clutch. Too bad they use silicone to seal the cover and not a gasket. I hate the goo method. Anyway the rear end fluid leaked over the dog bone bushings at the rear end sides for so long that they have become soft, cracked. Has anyone replaced these bushings or do you have to replace the whole dog bone?

I need to get all this stuff up on the web site....I'm working on it. Or should I say I'm working too much! No time.

Thanks for any input on the dog bones!

As I am sure we all know there are just some jobs that are really hard to complete. Sometimes I wonder if they dont make the cars so hard to work on. Some things are just over engineered. As for your bushings, hope somebody is along to help you out.

Good luck
Craig

You just have to replace the rubber. It shouldn't be too much of a problem. Here is an article from our own :CAC Tech Center. I have a funny feeling I am going to have to change all of the rubber on my 85.
Good luck

Polly Bushings

THANKS! for that article Nitronick. Great! I was hoping that the bushings alone could be replaced without having to replace parts too.

I suppose it would be a big deal to do all of them but not much bigger a deal than doing the clutch and rear end cover leak was. I might just do the stock type bushings and replace the ones that the oil leak made soft for now. I did the cover with RTV silicone sealer last weekend and let the stuff cure for a week. I filled the differential today. I hope waiting for the cure made the silicone stick and won't let the oil leak through again. The next time it leaks... I'll hammer out a paper gasket instead.

Happy Holidays!

The key to making sure the silicone actually seals is cleanliness. When I am ready to apply the sealer, I will give the mating surfaces a quick swipe with paint thinner or mineral spirits and let it dry for a couple minutes.

Merry Christmas

sealing the leak

Hi Mitch!
Yup that's what I basicly did. I used some brake kleen though. It does the same thing. Since the car is on jack stands I let it dry for the week any way. It couldn't have hurt.

You have a Merry Christmass too!
