Does anybody have any experience in shortening the torque tube on a C5 suspension. I am aware that some of the aftermarket frame manufacturers might be able to answer the question, but I first wanted to poll the Forum members to see if any body had gone through the process. :ugh

C5 info

Are you using it in a non-original application? You might want to look at the latest Popular Hot Rodding magazine with the orange Mopar (Cuda I think). Even though I love Chevrolet's, I can appreciate this modified Mopar, in which a C5 drivetrain was used. They were able to eliminate the torque tube and use a driveshaft by utilizing a TF dragster bellhousing. If I directed you to the wrong magazine/article, let me know and I will look through my stack, as I just read about this.

i think most of the corvette body after market frames use the engine mounted trans from a pontiac when going to the LS engines

one place to ask is over at z06vette.com, if you don't have an account over there, let me know, I can ask the question for you...a lot of guys over there mod the Z06, and may know others that have done as you have asked...

Thank you

Thanks to those of you who have taken of their time, to respond. I have now come to the conclusion that the additional work is not justified for this restoration, and will be using a C4 suspension in the rear, there by elimination the problem of the torque tube.

Bob,
That is a smart move, the D44 rear is pretty hard to beat. The C5 rear will fit under a C1, but on a C2 it makes for a lot of chopping, and will actually extend into the passenger campartment. I looked long and hard before deciding which suspension to use on my 65 before I finally decided on using a C5 front and C4 rear.

Thank's for your input

John, while discussing certain modifications, and work arounds, I was once complimented by a very experienced, and prominent Forum member, with the comment that " great minds think alike ".

At the time I was pleased to have my ideas and choices, confirmed by someone who had gone through the process, and could confirm that I had done the best, under the circumstances.

With your previous confirmations on my correct choices, I now have the same feelings.

Thank you and best regards.
Bob

BTW, in case you interested, I have just sold the car, and have been commissioned to complete the balance of the 18 month rebuild.

Bob,
You just can't beat that with a stick! Sell the car, and still get to build it! For me it is more about the build than owning the car, and as soon as I am done. I lose intrest in the car and am ready to start on a new one. I would do this for a living if I wouldn't starve to death!

Happy as a pig in shÎt

John,

To hear the above statement coming from you, is for me the " same Ole, same Ole ". I have a thing against collector cars ( especially Corvettes ) that no longer need any work, and that spend their day cover in flannel blanket, in a heated garage. Long live the basket case that's in need of a rebuild.

That being said, I kinda thought that I would be able to hold on to this one for a little while, however with the amount of dollars on the table, there was no way I could turn down the offer.

I have a rather large, and comfortable house with an attached, two level, 4 car garage, and I admit I would have been very happy to have had the same amount of money offered to me for the house, as was offered for the car.

So as you can see John, there should no longer be any doubt what so ever, as to why it is no longer in my toy box. :D

Now I have to find myself another coupe body shell.

Best regards
Stepinwolf
