I'm new to the forum and read the warning about the new proposed laws in Calif.I am thinking about moving to Cal.next year.I was wondering as of now, what I would have to go through to register my car there.I have a 75 that has true duals,no cat.I don't see any other smog devices, but I'm not sure what to look for. From what I read,I won't need a smog check but will they require a visable check to see if I have all the correct equipment on the car? Thanks

I believe it's '75 and older that are exempt from smog checks. You should be in the clear.

Today's your lucky day. Effective on the first of this month, a Smog Check is no longer required on initial California registrion of an out-of-state, 1975 or earlier car.

You're also exempt from the biannual Smog Check program, unless you get nabbed by either a roadside check or a road-side infrared detection check point. If that happens, it's the kiss of death because you'll have been found to be tampering with emissions and the car will be marked as a gross-polluter. Fortunately, with the state's budget crunch, roadside checks and the infrared monitering programs have been scaled-back.

Bottom line...welcome to the People's Demokratic Republik of Kalifornia and enjoy your Corvette.

Thanks for the responce guys.Does that mean that the proposed new laws were scrapped?Holy Moses, curbside checks, infrared monitoring!!!!!!

No.
It means that after the liberal-controlled legislature which panders to environmentalists, repealed the 30-year rolling exemption, they passed a new law that fixed the Smog Check back to MY76. Gov. Scharzenegger signed that bill and it went into effect on Jan 1. Later, either the legislature amended the law or the ARB amended it by statute such that cars built in years prior to MY76 no longer have to Smog Check upon registration in CA or upon change of ownership.

Cal.emission laws

Hib,thanks for clarifying all this BS for me.I'm originally from Cal.and I would like to move closer to my family and relatives.I'm not too crazy about going back there though. My backup plan would be to just go as far as the southern Oregon border.I still have one more year to figure it all out. Thanks again for the help.
