About a week ago a contractor was painting a tower here on the base I'm stationed at; didn't post any warning signs and I took my '87 to a meeting that was right across the street. The paint they were using was 50-year apoxie based -- this stuff 'soaks' in and sticks to just about anything.

Jump ahead to this morning. Went to the claims adjuster and within 30 minutes walked out with a check for a little over $3,700. Took the car and check directly to the paint shop. I did some research last week and found one that has a pretty good rep -- Factory Body & Paint. After talking to the guy and touring the facilities, I'm pretty confident they'll do a top notch job. The paint job comes with a life time (of the car) warranty. Anyway, I should have her back in 2-3 weeks. They'll be taking pictures as they progress and posting them to their website; so I'll post a few here as things move along.

Whoa! Sounds awful what happened! :eek

If you would like a second opinion, I know a place in your area that has done some awesome cars before - some that have "made magazines" :cool

Let me know, and I will pass along the info -

On another note, check the NACA's before the paint is laid - now of course is the time to fix them if they need it - I know of a few owners who have spend the time and efforts on this, as their NACA's were not laying in right anymore.

The guys painting the tower got overspray on about 25 cars down wind from where they were painting. It looked like dust at first, except is doesn't come off. It was so fine, you really couldn't tell until you were right up on the car.

As far as recommending a place, I'd like to know the name. It's a little late, as the shop is already in the process of taking my car apart.

Concerning the NACA ducts, I know they are glued in as well as bolted, any advice you (or someone else) can give on removal I can pass on to the shop would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Here's some pictures of her getting prepped for the paint booth. Looks like they're doing a good job so far ...

Were the NACA's removed???

WoW! That is interesting how in Tucson, your bodyshop preps outside - I guess the warm dry air makes it so it dosen't really matter -

Can't wait to see the finished product :upthumbs

p.s. Are those large white blotches in the one pic, the residue from the water tower??

Yes, they removed the NACAs. One had a small crack in it that they fixed.

It is extremly dry and arid here, and the last few days it has been in the 80's. They will do almost all the sanding and prepping in open air and move it to an enclosed area for the final prep before it goes into the paint booth -- the manager walked me through the entire process the day I dropped the car off.

If you're talking about the white marks around where they removed the NACAs, no that's where they had to sand down and fill the area around where they removed them -- it was a little ruff from the glue that held the NACAs in. If you're talking about the spotts you can see on the hood in the second pic -- yes it is some of the fall out of the overspray and using the clay bar on that stuff.

Very important lesson concerning the clay bar by the way. Make sure you know what is on your car before using it. According to this shop and a couple others I talked while trying to find them, the kind of paint that was on my car will not come off and any small chips that do manage to break loose will only get in the bar and scratch your paint -- this is sum pretty tuff stuff.

Good deal :upthumbs

Yes, the second pic w/ the spots :eek

That's also great the NACA's will be "rebuilt" - I was hoping that another 87 owner would have shared his story on the process, as he had his done and they turned out AWESOME! :cool

Heck! While you have that much of it allready torn apart to be painted.....you should have got you an Aerobody to put on it!

Thats a good point - Now would be a great opportunity, if he wanted to go that route - The entire car (body) is apart to the point the AeroBody could be fitted with litte addl. cost, compared to if not apart :upthumbs

Is there an AeroBody in the future???

Here is an awesome looking 1987 - winner of some cool awards under its new ownership :cool

Gotta agree the NACAS give it a very unique and agressive look -- I love them. As far as the Aerobody, I don't have any immediate plans to put one on. I've thought about it a couple of times, but I kinda like the way she looks now -- maybe someday down the road.

The owner of the car pictured above is the gentleman who redid his NACA's prior to the 2003 Corvettes @ Carlisle show - his car looked spectacular :cool
