i'm trying to install a low temp fan sensor from mid amer. on my 89. i only have 1 fan so i have to install the sensor where the aux. fan would be (between cyl 1 & 3) there is a factory plug there. how does this come out. what tool. all local gm guys have no clue! its sqare (female) between a 1/4 and 3/8 in size. any ext. drivers that come in sizes other than 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2?? thanks to all who have any info!:confused

That sounds like it will use a large allen wrench. They go up to 1" and even larger...measure the extact size and go to a tool place where they have these allen wrenches...should be able to find one that fits......

The plug has a square hole, I think it's 3/8" square if my memory is correct. An Allen wrench will not work on it. I used a piece of 3/8" square tool steel and a 8 point socket on the end of the tool steel square. Kind of like making your own tool here. If you use a long extension you can get in straight through the wheel well. I had to use an impact wrench to get the b*****d out. Be careful if you have the Aluminum heads, make sure they are cold before you attempt this or you can strip out the threads. This is what worked on my 86', your's is probably the same or similar setup. You may also be able to just stick the square drive end of a ratchet extension in the hole.

the sqare hole is 5/16 i can't find an extension this sizead i went to home depot for 5/16 sqare rod, figured i'd cut it and work it with a vise grip. :bash they have every size including 3/16, but no 5/16. i heard there was a special tool by GM anyone else. thanks for the info!

I used a piece of tool steel, like an old lathe tool bit. You can get them from a machine shop supply source. They come in 5/16" square. I thought it was a 3/8" square but that would have been too easy. The 5/16" square will fit into an 8 point socket and you should be able to remove the plug then.

That's probably the expensive way to go for a tool you may only use once! What does that tool look like?

the name of the tool is a : external plug socket.. (5/16) i hope its exactly 5/16. this is the size every one has been posting. if you go to the Snap On site and click hand tools, then click 3/8 dirve (or whatever drive you need the socket for) then click specialty sockets and scroll down you'll see it. it comes in all sizes, including metric! the price for the set is like 120-150. individually there aroung 10 bucks. is not too expensive. the shipping sucks though! (8 bucks for the 1 socket!!!!!!):eek i hope this will help anyone else searching like a mad man!!:crazy thanks to everyone who responded though! now its time to try and take the B**** out!!
