After 4 months of owning my '97 I just saw something today in the back on the driver's side that I don't have a clue about .

What purpose does this little box serve?

And of course the adhesive holding the plastic trim to the underside of the quater panel has failed.

Hi there,
Someone has been inside that area.
This is the mounting point where your Remote function actuation module is located.
Basically, the receiver for the keyless entry, and the tire pressure monitoring system.
This is directly beneath this protrusion.

Thanks c4c5. Upon futher inspection I found the module. I half expected something protruding down into the box-out but it appears the box-out is more for air flow around the unit.
