I'm new at this. Have a 72 Coupe and I'm trying to find out how "original" it is. The fuel tank was replaced before I purchased it. Thus no build sheet. (If there was ever one there). Is there any way to find out how this car was equipped when it left the factory? Maybe using VIN only? Any help appreciated.

I think you are out of luck. The NCM didn't get these things until much later and evidently the earlier ones were destroyed.

I think someone suggested once that if you can ID the dealer, that they might have the records.

Thanks, I am trying to trace ownership now. Harder than I thought.

the paint and interior code is inside the drivers door opening near the hinges, the serial # will be of some help, match the serial # to the block and tranny.

the ncrs will have the #s that should be on the carb etc. mike

Did the GM shipping records/transactions get destroyed also?

The 5th digit of the vin in 72 has the engine code in it. K is for base 350, L for LT1, and W for 454.
Your trim tag gives you paint and interior(vinyl or leather) codes.
Things like PW, tile-tele, etc can be added easily so you can't verify these options without documentation.

GM claims that there is no St. Louis documentation of a "per car" nature. And to be honest, is something like what Bolling Green has ever did surface from St Louis it could result in a lot of ugly lawsuits and destroyed relationships in the Corvette community. With all of the accurate fakes out there that could be proven false, lots of folks may be out a lot of money. I, personally, don't think anything will ever surface.
