Can the Crossfire injection fuel this cam/head combo?

I have an itch and need to scratch it. I want more that the Econo horsepower I presently have.

The car needs to stay smog legal because I am going to Germany this August. I want to put it in the 82 and use the crossfire injection system. Here are the specs I have for the motor.

-Cam: Comp Camps grind CSXR270-10 (Full Roller)
duration@.050 intake 218 exhaust 224
lobe lift intake .3300 exhaust .3350
lobe separation 110
-HEADS: L-31 no mods
-Pistons: Hypertectic flat top
-Block: bored .030 over

I know I am going to have to put a different PROM in the computer but don't know who to talk to or where to begin.

I have to modify the heads to accept the old style 12 bold crossfire intake manifold. The L-31 head is 8 bolt vertically drilled.
Another option I have is to use a newer TPI from a Camaro I have that uses a two injector throttle body to put on the present manifold (Performer with a Holly 4150 bolt pattern).
I can use the wiring from the old single injectors to wire up the double TPI. But don't know I don't know if there will be enough vacuum to work with the MAP sensor yet.

I really need to talk to someone who has done something like this..... Hopefully someone has tried this....

Mac........... Any help and insight very much appreciated

try looking at Barry Grant's website. they have a new fuel injection unit that is very slick looking. it is a throttle body that is off their Demon line. it uses a couple of different control units and is advertised as "very ecomonical". it may be a better way to go for what you want. as far as getting that cam to pass smog, the lobe sep is a little tight for a sniffer. just a last thought, the cross fire injection was designed for 305 not a 350, so it is taxed by design and may be very expensive to get running right. the guys at BG can answer most of your questions better than i, good luck and you'll love Germany!! I will give the it a shot on the other sites. I will post any posible solutions that I get. I hope to be able to this, if I can get it to work and get it close to passing emissions I will do it. For all I know right now they will not check my Vette when I get to Germany.

I am sure that is wishfull thinking though :eyerole

According to the guys at the crossfire forum the manifold wont cover the ports on the heads(vortec?) . the ports are not tall enough and you will have a massive vacuum leak. There was some talk about using the bottom half of a vortec intake from a pickup and making a custom lid for the throttle bodies but there is an issue with the egr setup. I don't think vortec heads have an exhaust crossover in them, I beleive thay use a tube from the exhaust manifold to feed the egr. check on the forum for more info. good luck.

MACD2469, I have and 82 w/Vortec heads and I'm running the Edlebrock Performer RPM intake w/a 454 TBI. It is presently using the factory wiring harness and ECM. It runs very well and fits under the stock hood.

You may want to try this setup with a GMPP Vortec TBI intake w/egr. It will not be an Xfire, but will still be TBI injection and will give you lots of power.

I would also figure out/test the setup and bring it to Germany with me, but not installed on the car. You will probably stand a better chance passing the testing with the original setup.

Good luck...

Blue82, Thank you! This will work to get me in the right direction. I don’t really want to modify the original manifold and this will make that possible.
You said you had a 454 TBI? What is this, from a 454 C.I.D motor?

Mac

The TBI is the throttle body injector. With the Vortec heads and intake your engine will breathe much better. Add a bigger cam and boring .030 over (in my case) a 5.7l TBI was too small. The 454 is a direct bolt on amd moves about 640 CFM. I need to replace the injectors though because the 5.7L don't flow enough fuel and the 454 flow too much.

If all you do is the heads and the intake, I would use the 5.7L TBI with the 5.7L injectors. You will run much better if you re-chip it, but keep in mind that there really isn't much going on with the original ECM so you'll need to switch to the 1227747 or one of the others that are being tuned for the TBI system.

Also, if you go with a carb'd intake and use the TBI unit, you need to use a Holley adapter plate p/n 17-45. to convert the TBI mounting bolt pattern.

There's a guy on the CF Injection Valut that is running a ZZ4 motot with a modded TBI intake that is also working real well.
