I'm close to wrapping up a deal on a '81 Corvette that was originally sold in Canada. It's been repowered with a 350 4-bolt main, but the rest of the car is pretty much stock. Is there anything unique about Canadian Corvettes?

I know the speedo and odo will be kph. Is there anything else?

I don't know about the difference for an 81 but I belive the cars are basically the same. I bought my 69 from a guy from Canada, it has MPH not KPH. The only problems I had was I had to go through customs to get the correct paper work, that the seller should have taken care of but I bought it at Carlise so... There were no big problems since it was old enough not to have any emissions issues, just a trip to customs and a few forms to sign. There maybe issues on a newer car?

Canadian Corvette Permanently into US

I did a bit of research and there are a couple of time factors that come into play when bringing a Corvette originally sold in Canada into the US. US Customs tells me that if the car is more than 21 years old it is exempt from EPA requirements, however US-DOT still requires a statement from GM-Canada that the car meets US-DOT standards. You would be exempt from this US-DOT standard if the car exceeds 25 years.

The car I'm looking at falls right in the middle ('81) so I callled GM to ask about the US-DOT letter and the letter is available for $65 Canadian. And as it turns out it covers you for both EPA and US-DOT.

Hope that might help head off some problems at the border for someone looking on the great white north for a car.

Moving vehicles across the border can be tricky. I have done it a few times with some problems. I brought two nearly identical Harley's from Canada to USA, most people know where these bikes are built, I had problems with one and not the other. One was missing a sticker on the frame.

I also sent a mini-van to Canada, originally bought in Canada, but had been in USA for a few years. Had a pretty big hassle getting it cleared.

You cannot really check all of these things out before hand. It would be a case of calling up some government workers and asking them if they plan on being stupid or irrational in the coming days.

Good luck with it.
