Gone but not forgotten
In May 2002, I ordered the custom Car-Go Carrier (stock no. 104261) that fits on the factory luggage rack of my C4. $499 plus shipping. When I finally received it the Carrier was functional, but the the quality was, to say the least, not up to a corvette owner's standards. I called Corvette Central and they sent me a UPS label to return the item and ordered another one from the manufacturer for me. I told them how disappointed I was in the the quality. Today I received a call from Corvette Central and was told that the manufacturer has a problem with the molds and that the imperfections will be on all of their Carriers. Corvette Central said that the Carrier requires additional work, such as repairs to the fiberglass and filling uneven areas before it is ready for painting. To say the least, I was disappointed to hear all of this. Corvette Central said that they will continue to supply the carrier, but will put additional information in their catalog about the quality. I asked the customer service rep if she had seen the returned carrier - she had. She said that she was also disappointed in the quality and had called the manufacturer about it. Once learning of the mold problems, she called me and offered a full refund. I took it.
The carrier is still functional and should meet the added space requirements for the C4 convertible equipped with the luggage rack. It just will cost more once you receive it because of the refinishing required. The estimate I got on the painting of the Carrier without refinishing was between $220- $250 by the Chevy Dealer's contract paint shop.
Vendors like Corvette Central are to be commended for their efforts in serving the corvette public. They could have sent me a replacement and that was it. They took the time to call me first, explain the facts, and offer me a choice. They probably got stuck with shipping costs in the transaction, about $60. But they stood behind their motto or slogan of quality first. They treat their customers right.
Also, for your information, their catalog shows the factory luggage rack available for $189 (stock no. 33427). This rack is no longer availabe thru Chevrolet. I sold my spare rack to a friend of Elaine's (GS Diva) as I may have purchased the last one available from GM last year.
