I am in the process of selling my 26' enclosed car hauler. The trailer is much too long for my needs and I am looking to buy a shorter trailer. What is the shortest enclosed trailer that is recommended for hauling Corvettes? (C-1 and C-2)

Thanks Ray

Hi Ray.

Several folks I know seem to be real happy with 20 ft enclosed trailers. These are just vette fans that like to tow their toys to shows and they don't need anything larger to haul tools and equipment along with their vettes.

Take care,
Brian

Thanks for the kudos, Studiog, but the real credit goes to my wife. She has all the talent in the web design field and loves to build websites.

How could I not link it to Bob's site.......his car is totally cool and he only lives 20 mins from my house...he's practically family:D

Take care,
Brian

Yes of course. What was I thinking. :duh

Ray,

I have a 20 foot Pace, and am real happy with it. You could probably squeeze one in an 18, but it would be tight. In the 20, I have room for two large storage boxes mounted in the front of the trailer, a winch, and tie-downs for lawn chairs and the like.

Ray I used to own a 26' enclosed trailer,I think your making an excellent choice to down size.Every time I had the trailer on it was a chore. The smallest vechicle I have used to tow with was the wifes exculade so its not like I am using too small a tow vechicle.

I now have an open 18' car trailer and love it,it disapeers behind my truck.and the wind or tractor trailers/buses dont grab or pull it as they used to with the big trailer.

What I gave up was the benifit of all the extra nose room ,and the security of an enclosed, and a place to leave a car for the winter,But what I gained was the joy of trailering an easey to tow rig.My wife wold never get behind the wheel of a vechicle with the big enclosed trailer. But she has no problem with the open car trailer.

I chose an open trailer because We have a small backhoe loader for my buisness and it would not fit in an enclosed trailer,If it wasnt for the backhoe I would have gotton the shortest, lowest trailer a vette could fit in

I bought a 16' aluminum trailer and have put on it my C5's, C2 and as you can see the C1.....no problem fitting all of car on the trailer, even have room for the electric winch (great option to have, much easier on the clutches). I wanted enough trailer for the vettes, nothing more. I ran around the cars with a tape measure and ended up with this. good luck on what ever you do....notice the ramps are stored when not in use attached to the front of the trailer and serve as a stone guard for the front of the trailered car....

Thanks First Gear, IH2LOSE and John Mc

I am going to purchase an enclosed trailer. I am not sure if the specifications would be the same for an enclosed vs. an open trailer. I have a Chevy 2500 with heavy-duty suspension and tow package and the 26' works the truck pretty hard. John, what size truck do you tow with?

Thanks Ray

Ray,

you are absolutely correct. The sizing is entirely different for an open trailer. You can fit a Corvette on a 16 or 18 open trailer pretty easily, but not an enclosed one. I have seen C1 cars inside a 18' trailer, but I would not go that small since it is almost impossible to move around in it.

Hey, first gear who makes that trailer? thanks.
R&R Trailer out of Michigan.....all aluminum, electric brakes on all 4 wheels....shop around, I found it out of Illinois for $800 cheaper than I could get the same thing only 75 miles away....made it worth going to get it....good luck

I had a 20' Pace also, with 102" axles, beavertail, E-Track tiedowns, lights, roof vents, etc. to haul my Cobras and Grand Sport - had room in the front for the winch, generator, and compressor, plus two toolboxes. Check the axle specs before you buy an enclosed trailer - many of them don't really have the capacity for the weight of the trailer, a 3500# car, and the other stuff with the "standard" axles.

Ray,

A couple of other things to think about when buying an enclosed trailer. A lot of trailer mfg's offer springs as the standard and torsion axles as an option. The trosion axles, in my opinion, are the only option worth considering. This suspension setup has the axle tube mounted directly to the floor of the trailer and the tire is mounted on an arm that cantilevers off the axle with a elastomeric torsion spring. This setup offers a better ride and since the axle does not have to go up and down, the trailer can be mounted very close to the road, which makes easy loading and lower wind resistance. Also, Make sure that your door will open over the tire well in the side of the trailer. I have several friends with trailers that have 2 X 12" planks attached to the floor as runways to raise the car to allow the doors to open. This was still a problem with Haulmark last time I looked. My Pace will clear both C1 and C2 doors.

Thanks for all the information! Hope to start looking for the new trailer today.

Hey guys,

what kind of pricing are we talking with a 20' enclosed trailer? I have been thinking about this also. There are not too many shows and events in Richmond VA and I dont think I want to drive the 67 longer than a few hours at a time. Gas and the ringing in my ears.

I bought a 20Ft Haulmark Trailer. Previous post stated the doors will not open over the wheel wells, this is correct, but I did not car because I purchased a winch with a 40ft extenstion cord. I haul with a 2005 Silverado Diesel, Club Cab with not problem at all. I got the trailer new for about $6200.00 so I was very happy. I have internal light, and have just finished painting the interior and putting down floor tile.

The trailer tows with no problems at all, and I really like the set up for the price and the size. Hope this helps a little.
