N Go to Step 2

2
Inspect for a loss of coolant.
Is there a loss of coolant?
Y Go to Step 3
N Go to Step 4

3
Fill the system to the specified level. Refer to Loss of Coolant .
Does the engine overheat?
Y Go to Step 4
N System OK

4
Inspect for low coolant protection. Refer to Coolant Concentration Testing .
Is the coolant to the correct concentration?
Y Go to Step 5
N Go to Step 8

5
Inspect for a loss of system pressure. Refer to Cooling System Leak Testing .
Is there a loss of system pressure?
Y Go to Step 8
N Go to Step 6

6
Inspect for a faulty engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor. Refer to Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor Replacement in Engine Controls.
Is the sensor operating properly?
Y Go to Step 7
N Go to Step 8

7
Inspect for a cracked coolant surge tank or a leaking hose. Refer to Loss of Coolant .
Is the surge tank cracked or is the hose leaking?
Y Go to Step 8
N Go to Step 3

8
Repair or install new parts as necessary, then retest.
Does the engine overheat?

Y Go to Step 3
N Go to Step 17

17
Consult the current parts catalog and replace the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement .
Is the repair complete?
Y System OK

Blue coupe, very informative post. Kind of looks like a C++ program I wrote last semester for class. Silver97 you shouldn't have to change the thermostat, unless you suspect it is faulty. There is something that is not allowing the cooling system to do it's job right.

Thank you
Silver97...before you do unnessary things..try this first...see if there is any air in the system...you can let the air out of a bleed screw on the water pump...that may very well be your problem...air not bled out of the system can cause overheating...:beer

Also check to see if you have a 50/50 mixture...too much antifreeze can cause overheating also...:)

When you inspect the radiator make sure you are looking at the radiator and not the A/C cooler. The A/C sits in front of the radiator and many times all kinds of stuff will get between the two and will block air from getting to the radiator.

I had a '97 that overheated, and replacing the thermostat fixed the problem.
