casting no# ????

i have a 74convertible the block cast # is 3970014 or 3790014most are 3970010 or 3790010 what is the difference between an 0010 and a 0014 i only found oo14 on 72 and73

I'm having trouble finding the 379s, so I'm not sure about those.

3970014 was used on a very small (unverified) number of very late 1972 Corvettes; also used in many '69-'77 passenger car models and trucks.

The likelihood is that this is not the original motor. The 3970010 could handle horsepower ratings from 185 to 370, while the 3970014 had a 200 - 300 hp range.

What is on the stamp pad? A machined surface on the block in front of the passanger side head. Should be two sets of numbers there. Post those and we can tell you what it is.

Castings can run 2 or 3 months earlier then the vehicle,cast,machine,assemble,shipping.If you you have an early 74,say sept.then the motor would have 73 dates and the earlier casting number.

THE NUMBERS ON THE front of the block have been removed when motor was rebuilt . ther e is a date number on back of block on driver sid e j 12 73. motor runs great. but pings. timing is set at 4degees before o .have good gas in car but pings. don,t know what compression is . heads and block may have been cut.when engine work was done. george

J1273 would be Oct 12 1973 when the block was cast.Try a little bit of etching or touchup gun blueing solution on the pad,it may bring out the numbers.
