Have been using Mobil 1 oil and filter in my '96 LT4. Just came across as ad from Castrol on their 'Edge' synthetic motor oil and would like to ask other owner their thoughts on this as well as any other motor oil they may have experience with.

Thanks, and safe driving.

I like to use what's recommended for the engine. I have another car with an engine stamp of "Mobile 0 weight 40". With the performance I have received over the years with the Mobil 1, I would be reluctant to change. Is it the price that makes you consider? I'm sure other oils will work with LT1's and LT4's but why change? I use castrol or pensoil in other vehicles that don't require a specific brand. I know those guys in nascar use the oils they advertise so lubricants today are well above what they used to be. I guess it's more of what you have luck with ... I never give the oil a thought other then when it needs to be changed. My opinion and I'm sure you will get others that have used other lubricants in their cars with the same result. ;shrug

My brother uses castrol oil in his C5. He says it's alittle better than mobil 1. I guess that's because he works for the company that produces and sells castrol oil so go figure...lol. :chuckle

I use both. The castrol I use is conventional. I have been very happy with both oils. I imagine the new castrol is just as good as mobil 1.

Hibs article is all you ever need to know about oil...If, however, you desire to delve beyond anybody's expert opinion BOBISTHEOILGUY.com is full of petrochemical engineer's opinions.......I actually get a full synthetic(coastal..warren petroleum products) change and lube all points inspection 35lbs per tire ..for $49.95every 5k...82k miles so far, ..strong as dirt to this day.

all overkill for most of us daily drivers.

keep it simple: buy the cheapest oil, whatever is on sale, make it dino oil. synthetic is a waste unless you're a major racer head.

just change it every 5,000 miles.

beyond that its pissing your $$ away and a waste of time.

For the LT motors, the oil is supposed to meet the GM4718M specification. All of the oils that meet it are synthetic but not all synthetics meet the spec. It might be overkill, but GM did go to some reason to make a different spec for some of their motors, so there might be a reason for it. Beyond that, I would say you would be good with any oil that meets the spec (there aren't many), change it regularly and oil related problems will be the last of your worries.

If that is what you really think about oil , don't ever try to sell me one of your cars. I would be very afraid of engine problems. I could tell you some instances of what cheap oil does in an engine.

i have been using cheap oil for 30 years. i've used it in every car i've owned, and that includes my white-trash modded up C4. i've owned it for 6 years now, its been modded for 5 1/2, and i gun it every day. never had a problem, never had oil issues, nary a thing. and i will gun it till i blow it up :thumb

as for castrol, not a thing wrong with it. i'll take it any day over the overpriced mobil stuff -- i ain't in the "only the best for my baby" crowd.

Might I ask what the oil looks like when it comes out?

I've converted to synthetics in the place where I work in all of our older equipment quite a few years ago and I can tell you this, a lot less rebuilds over the years then when we used conventional oils. The sythentics come out cleaner. Lab tests confirm that the oil is changd often enough even though I change it a lot less. I'm a believer in good oil only cause it's less work for me and I'm gettin old. I think it's worth the xtra $$$. My opinion.

I had a 2001 Ford F-F150, and I tried to run Mobil 1 in that once and it lost like a quart, easy, after a thousand miles, never again. One thing is for sure I use Mobil 1 for my 1992 vette only, (the 76 gets Rotella) and I change it every 7,500 miles as per my 92 GM FSM.

That commercial kills me!!!! with that Irishman that is whipping everyone with his dipstick (Umm.... that didnt sound right, did it??):boogie;LOL:rotfl

Advice received from a Senior Mobil Oil Engineer when I asked what oil I should be using. As a long time neighbor (now deceased), he understood how I maintained and drove my cars. "Just use the oil type and grade recommended by the manufacture. A high quality oil filter is critical to engine life, and regardless of the brand oil used, change it frequently. Mobil 1 is great product to use when synthetic oil is required." I've followed his advice for years and never had any oil related engine issues on any of my Ford, GM, Mopar, or Honda cars.

The above is poor advice.

In many cases use of the "cheapest oil" may not meet the minimum requirements in your car's Owner's or Service Manuals and may decrease the engine's durability.

As for "...synthetic being a waste unless you're a major racer head."
:boogie
Sheesh. Come on, "bradvette," are you making this stuff up? What the heck is a "major racer head," anyway?

Reality is that a synthetic engine oil may not be necessary in engines built in 1991 or earlier, but synthetic is required in any Corvette engine built after 1991.

I'd say he knew what he was talking about and I'd have to agree.:thumb

I couldn't agree more. I run conventional Castrol GTX in my firebirds. Mobil 1 synthetic in my vette, truck, and wifes honda.

i had a gmc safari van that i never changed the oil in i just changed the filter and didnt put in the same brand twice..(usually)
at 285,000 miles i parked it because of many other issues with wiring and air cond and transmission and door handles,,and tore up seats and ..every moving part except the engine..
so oil is oil ... but....only the good stuff for my baby also..
regardless of what other engines like..
all them roller gizzmoes and tiny tolerances..in my corvette may like it a bit better
and thats good enough for me

I use Mobil 1 5/30 as that's what is called for in the owners manual of my C-5, and I can often buy 7 quarts at Walmart for $29.97 My concern is adhearing to the GM4718M specs. But I also have to mention that mobil 1 synthetic is the factory fill for all 2009 Porsche models, all Rolls Royce engines, and about twenty five other major upper dollar high end manufacturers. If there was so much as even the slightest doubt about Mobil 1 motor oil is good enough, i really doubt Porsche would use it in every sigle high performance model they build?
But i use either Castrol regular motor oil in my 84 corvette or vavoline or Pennsoil as they are all good to great oil. But when I looked on the bottle lable of Castrol 'Edge' oil that it was not stated as being compliant with GM4718M specs for synthetic motor oil.
