I am looking for subtle ways to get better performance out of my '77. Does anyone know how much benefit I can expect from a high flow catalytic converter vs. stock? Should I just remove it and put in a bypass?

I hope to modify other things down the road. I don't think I'll waste any time on the exhaust until then. I did put Dynomax mufflers on when the originals needed replacement. It definitely sounds better. I already got a K&N air filter.

Thanks for your input.

Increasing air flow......ie headers, high flow or no cats, and true dual exhaust are about the cheapest HP gain you could get without engine mods. All of the above should collectively gain about 30-40 Hp over a single cat exhaust system. Some technical data was posted some months ago showing actual dyno runs with exhaust modifications, it was a real eye opener:eek

clarkwood-welcome the CAC! what are your emission regulations in NJ? the best performance modification i did to my car was to install a true dual system with no cat-convertor.my car is exempt from emission testing in PA.#1 we have no testing where i live and #2 my car would be exempt anyway since i have it registered as a classic car.my car is stock otherwise and i would agree that i have gained 30-40hp,big difference!

I have collector registration in NJ. The only requirement at inspection is that it is driven less than 3000 miles per year. They do not test emissions for collector. I think I will look into doing true dual exhaust. Maybe it can be build with cat bypass pipes so they can be added later if I want to drive more.

Any recommendations on manufacturers of dual exhaust systems? How much should it cost?

I used the stainless system from Mid-America.It was $299.It does not come with the mufflers. There are many different choices available for mufflers depending on your tastes.I personally went with the Flowmasters and am very pleased with sound and performance.

If you don't currently have true duals, you might be well off to have the pipes custom made at a muffler shop. I think you will like the fit much better. However the entire systems are available through Jegs or Summit. Two mufflers come to mind, Dynomax Turbo and Flowmaster both are good quality and will give you an awsome sound. The entire system with mufflers (not stainless) should run you around $350-$400 max. Take a look around here or request a catalog www.jegs.com or www.summitracing.com

If you're using the stock exhaust manifolds, I don't think that the true dual exhaust "packages" will fit. Bobchad knows all about this. He ended up going to a muffler shop and having the true dual system fabbed up. It might actually be cheaper to buy a set of headers and a true dual system, then to have a custom true dual setup made. Not sure though, you'll have to check on that.

Give bobchad a pm, he can fill you in on the details.

I personally have a hooker header-back system with no cats and I think it sounds awesome. I don't know what gains I've seen since I've never dyno'd the car but it is quick. You can also pick up an easy 100rwhp with a good head/cam combo.

I debated this issue back and forth, headers and kit v. stock ram horns with a custom build.

What it came down to for me was concerns about not being able to get my car worked on without the cats. I'm getting more confident working on my car though I'll never be able to do the work a lot of these guys do. I needed to be able to take my car in when I thought I would be getting in over my head. Even though your state or area does not inspect, the Feds require the emissions equipment to be on the car. The better shops in my area would not work on the car without the cats for fear of a $10,000 EPA fine.

I was also concerned about the bends in the "generic" kit not matching. While the companies do a good job, every car is a little different and I didn't have the equipment to make them fit. I heard lots of stories about the tight fit and rattling from under the car.

As I recall the pricing, the kits were $300 - 350 or more by the time you got them delivered, another $150 or so for a pair of delivered mufflers and the cost of the headers. I didn't look to closely at this but vaguely recall they were $200 or so.

I had my whole installation done for $700 with a good warranty. This included two FM Delta 50's, two high flow cats and the 2 1/4" piping that was recomended for the low HP 77's. Sounds great (my link is above, take a look as it shows the config and the sound with the new system).

Others have posted HP increases when they changed over, I personally didn't see it. I may have already had a free flow cat the way the thing was rotted out.:grinshot

I will evewntually modify the engine for more HP and get the headers and have the pipes cut/bent to fit them but other posts suggested that the ram horns were good enough on the 77.

Good luck with your decision.

I installed the true dual system with my stock manifolds. No problem. They fit nice up under the car too!I put in on myself at home.

Dave

true dual system-what it cost me.

Bob- the kit from Mid-America was $ 299 + shipping(about $15).I already had the Flowmasters and the inlet pipes. After I installed the system,I had a freind of mine at the muffler shop 'tweak'the inlet pipes a little to get the exact fit I was looking for.I think that was $69.The whole system fits under the car very snugly and is rock solid. The best money I have ever spent on the car.

Dave

Thanks Dave. Price is in line with what I quoted. It has been 2 or 3 months and I wasn't 100% sure on my prices.

I've seen posts on guys claiming that the whole job at a shop shouldn't bee more than $300 or so and I don't know how they can possibly get that price from a reputable shop unless it is just to hang pipes they bend to fit to the existing mufflers.

I wish I had a friend in a muffler shop to have tweaked my system. Would have save me about $200 in labor.

Bob
