I just put a Magnaflow exhaust on my 1989 L98. I am also going to be changing the three cats. The two front smaller cats are not an issue, but the big one in the back is the one I am wondering about. I can get a generic that my "Corvette exhaust guy" loves. I was wondering if any of you in California, or any where else had used an after market cat or should I use OE. If any of you tried the generic cat did they pass smog and have they been holding up. Thanks

Fwiw

I had a generic for a while that was rather small and had a few issues passing, immediately after having it installed. Understand that my car was running quite rich at the time and I passed after resetting the ECM (as I had learned a few years earlier).

I just talked with a nearby shop, who told me that there are two types of cat available, regardless of brand. One has the standard-sized honeycomb you see in your stock cat. The other has larger combs (or honeys or whatever) :eyerole that may allow more flow, but will not be as effective in its work. I think it's about total exposed surface area of the catalyst.

The only other option is cross sectional size of the unit. I was quoted $200 for a bolt-in, high flow cat for my '84.

I've got a 2 3/4" SS Borla (5,000 mi) for less than that if you're interested.
