Yes, I know there are some that say how can it ever be too loud? I recently installed a chambered dual exhaust system from MAD on my '76 and it is just too loud for my tastes. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to tone it down. Is it even possible? Can you keep the chambered portion and just add some sort of mufflers like Flowmasters? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I I had the exact same problem on my '77. What I did was have a muffler shop put 12" glass packs where the factory mufflers would go--it was cheap to do and it cut the sound volume in half--without changing the sound quality.

One trick is to add a cross over pipe (H Pipe). It will mellow the exhaust note.

tom...

H pipe will help, even better is what I did- sell them!

They were the worst fitting pipes I ever used-made by a well known supplier too. I went with a 2.5" system with flowmasters fit and sound much better. Chambered pipes choke down to 2" inside the chambered sections, not good for HP.

Thanks all for your help. I decided to go with the suggestion from photovette. It sounds great now. It has more of a deeper tone but still retaining characteristics of the chambered exhaust. (sounds like I'm describing wine)

Ed: Both Tom73 and Photovette have excellent suggestions. I have done both with great success on same type of problem on previously owned cars.--George.

Yep, it takes real men to admit their exhaust systems are too loud. I still set off car alarms when I drive by in spite of the additional mufflers.

I'm glad to hear that I am not the only one....I have ceramic headers with m.a. chambered pipes and the first summer I loved them, but by the end of the second summer I can't wait to quiet 'em down a little.....( I must be getting old I guess!!!):(
I was thinking of the exact same type of fix like photovette did,but can't decide which mufflers to get....I don't want to make the same mistake again:hb ,but I don't want it too quiet either..:confused .I am looking at the thursh turbo's because they're about the right size and price, but alot of guys like the magnaflow$ too....Can anybody give me some more suggestions or better yet some part numbers????

I just had some generic 12 inch glass packs added at a local muffler shop. Originally the guy at the shop suggested flowmasters but when he saw the MAD chambered setup he said he would have to do additional pipe work to get the mufflers to sit up where they should. The glass packs were easily installed and sound great. It is definitely not too quiet, at least in my opinion.
