Check engine light - Air pressure injection malfunction (P0410)

I just had this check engine light come on my 1998 with 39K on it. The code (from the Autozone scanner) is P0410 which reads "air pressure injection malfunction". Can someone please advise me what this is, what the best action would be for me to take, and ballpark on cost. Your help is greatly appreciated!

Hi JJCP,

Funny you should post that. My 98 with 38k miles just threw a P1416, air Sys Bank 2B. So, though I can't help you out, I'm going to hold on to your coat-tails, and see if c4c5specialist or Hib, or any of the other experienced folks can help us out.

You know, Lingenfelter and I believe the resources on this forum, provide a method to use the DIC to obtain your codes without having to go to an Autozone or Advanced Auto Parts Store.
Essentially the process is:

1) Turn the ignition to RUN, the car does NOT need to be STARTED
2) Push and Hold the OPTIONS button while
3) Depressing the FUEL button 4 times rapidly (within 10 seconds)
That gets you into the Manual Diagnostics Mode. From there, you can write the codes down and look them up in the reference documentation CAC provided. What a great tool huh?

Hi there,
Your P0410 could simply show that your air injection system, which is run during cold starts, it not working.
This means that the motor may not be running, the fuse could be blown or the air injection check valve may be rusted shut.
When you start the vehicle cold, listen for a humming noise, coming from below the drivers headlight assembly.
Let us know if you hear it. This will only be from a start first thing in the morning, or after it has been sitting all day.

Thanks for the input guys! C4C5 specialist - I started up the car and the humming is definitely there. As I also used the suggestion of Silver98, found all these codes from the DIC:



10-PCM P0410

28-TCS C1255

A0-LDCM B2282, B2282, U1064

A1-RDCM B2253, B2203, B2283, B2285

A6-SCM B0851, B2605, B2606, U1160



FYI - I don’t know if this would have anything to do with my problem, but I made the mistake of filling up the car with regular unleaded gas (87)….forgetting I was filling up the Vette and not one of my other cars. The light came on about half-way through that tank (that is what got me thinking that I put the wrong gas in). Last time I had the car out I emptied the tank, and put a fresh full tank of Amoco gold (93) in it, and erased the code. When I went out this morning, I started the car 4 different times and the check engine light did not come back on yet (although I am expecting it to come on again as soon as a get a dry day to drive it. because I doubt the problem was gas related).

Thoughts?

HI there,
Your air injection check valves are probably rusted shut.
IT does happen and each valve is about $25 and there are 2.
The passenger side valve is tough, because you have to remove the intake to get to it.

what is the best way for me to figure out how to fix it? Is there a good manual that would walk me through how to change the valves? Not sure what the dealer would charge me to fix those, but nothing is cheap when you go there. I am not a mechanic, but I can follow step by step instructions if they are good.

Hi JJCP,

Just had the very same thing on my '98. It was covered under the 30day / 3k mile warranty, but here is the data from the dealer's invoice (it was free to me, but..)
1) Diagnosed and replaced Bank 2 Air Valve labor: $151.90
2) Gasket: $49.11 GM Part # 12533587
3) Valve A: $15.81 GM Part# 22046212

When I asked the Service Manager (very knowledgable and cool too!) he said that you have to remove the intake manifold (TB?) and that's the gasket. They also checked the other valve and said it was good.

Hope that helps, AND I'm assuming its the same air valve you're talking about. Its the check valve that prevents exhaust gas from being recylced ( vacuum dragged) back into the inlet air.

I know this is an old post I'm responding to, but gas can be the problem. I went to my usual fill up spot and the "genius" pumping the gas didn't listen to me when I said "$20, Super"... I didn't notice that he selected regular until the gas was 95% pumped. I was pissed and told the guy that my car is going to run like crap now... One day later, check engine light is on. Threw the P0410 code and I was even more pissed... Was hoping it was just the bad gas, but had to wait it out. I ran the tank to just about empty and then filled it up with the best gas around I could find. Drove it for 20 miles or so, then went into the DIC and cleared the P0410 code. Restarted and the check engine light was gone. Phew... Didn't want to start tracing my vacuum hoses like others have suggested.

Good or bad gas will not set a P0410 code.
