I went to the local tire chain today I originally called for a price on GY F1 GS-D3s he then wanted me to look at Toyo T1Rs because they were much less expensive. After some research I thought I would go with BFG KDWs because they offer better grip than the Toyos and are less money than the D3s. When I get to the store the kid tells me they don’t make a Toyo in 285-40 17 the size I need for my rear. I guess the Toyos are out, so then he does a search for the KDWs and they make them in my size but there are none available in the 285 size he calls up BF Goodrich and they tell him they have none on order it could be a year before they available in the 285 size I need. So then he offers me the Good Year F1 GS-D3's. $1,005.98 for four tires installed balanced valves and a four wheel alignment. I think this is a great deal what do you think. I still wish I could get the KDWs though.

A good deal. Not a great deal, IMHO.

Did you check out a Goodyear store? You can negotiate with any tire store. A Goodyear store has more to gain by giving you a great deal.

Also, check out road hazard. I think I only paid $7 per tire and I happen to have a flat on one of my rears. I will recover the money I spent with this one repair!

I have the F1 GS D3s. Did I mention that? :L

Save The Wave! :w

I'd see what I could get for a deal on TireRack.com.
Take whatever the Tire Rack quotes (print it out), and take it to the local GoodYear dealer. Most of the dealerships are sick of losing their business to the Tire Rack, and will meet ot beat their prices. If you can get installation or balancing thrown in as an incentive, then you've won all the way around. Good luck.

Tire rack shows the BFGOODRICH KDWs 285 40WR17s as in stock and on special for 144.00 each and the front 255/45WR17 are 138.00 each.
The GS-D3s are listed for 213.00 for the fronts and 207.00 for the rears.

Roger that! The KDW is now listed as backorder and you did not want the KDWS. A couple of weeks ago the KDW was in stock! I have been looking for tires I would love to get another pair of Potenzas however, the Potenzas I have now have been discontinued and their replacement is not made in a 285. I have been thinking about the GS-D3s since their tread pattern looks like my Potenzas however, I don't know if they are going to be worth anything in the snow. I wish they still made my old Potenza!

Apparently the Supercars are discontinued in 315/35-17 size. So I was considering buying some of the last ones off TireRack, and called a local place to install them. They said I'd have to pay by the hour and it might take several hours, and then he worked out a price for me if they sold them.

He was all wheeling and dealing "estimating" the cost from TireRack with shipping, mounting, etc, always rounding every estimate up. His final price was $1870 for all 4 tires installed and force-balanced and bought from them. He kept saying how that's about what it would cost me from TireRack anyway. The tires are like $1350 shipped from TireRack. Needless to say I still have my old GS-C's on there.

You got yours installed for about $200 over the TireRack price. So that's pretty good, that's about what it would cost you anyway to have them installed, and they probably treated you better since you bought the tires from them.

The place I called has done well for me in the past, so the wheeling-dealing attitude sort of surprised me, especially when the deal was so obviously bad. I don't tend to like Goodyear installers, though. I'm not sure why they just always gave me a bad impression.

I think I paid about $80 for mounting and balancing from the Ye Ole Wheel shop for the tires I ordered from the Tire Rack to be put onto my Dymags last week :cool

I just don't understand the negative attitude towards shops not wanting to install tires that the consumer didn't purchase from them. What the shops don't realize is that when they want to gouge the consumer on that, not only do they lose that sale, but they also lose any future sales with that consumer and possibly that consumers friends.

In my town, there are too many tire dealers and I'm going to love it when it comes time to buy tires. The Discount Tire and NTB are literally right across the parking lot from one another! Goodyear, Firestone, Sears and PepBoys are right down the street. We have 5 shops within a 1 miles radius! :D

This kind of reminds me of gun transfers to FFL's. A lot of shops don't want to do a transfer because they feel it takes money out of their pockets. A gun transfer consists of 10 minutes of work and FFL's generally charge $25. Isn't that pretty good money for 10 minutes of work?

Hmm, never thought about that place. Do they do road-force balancing? It's in NoVA, right? Actually, nm, I think they have a website. But if you have any tips let me know, that's good thinking. I'm sure they wouldn't scuff up wheels there.

I take my Jeeps to the Jeep dealership where I bought the cars, and have them do the tires. They do all the service work on the Jeeps, and they didn't even charge me for getting rid of the old tires.

I took the vette to the corvette restorer here in central MA (Ron's Auto restorations), and had him do my vette. I had purchased replacement wheels that I wanted painted, along with new trim rings. I had him do that work before I picked it up from storage ( I store with him also) a couple of years ago. He still has my old set of tires, wheels, and trim rings. The tires are like new.

Tires

Go to WestKYcustoms.com or call them for their best price on tires...1-270-559-0698
I have tried them and they beat the tire rack prices by a bunch

Edmond,
Most tire store are places you want to avoid in the first place, but the problem with bringing your own tires is likely due to event such as the Firestone tire debacle from a couple years back (the Wilderness AT blowing out on Explorers and other Ford SUVs), and with todays litigious society, nobody wants to take chances. Plus, they don't want to take the chance of damaging your wheels (remember... tire equipment costs money and most shops don't or won't invest in a machine to do large diameter alloys or runflats), due to the stereotype of the fussy (read pain in the a$$) Corvette owner. The typical "tire buster" isn't exactly who you want handling your stuff, though there are some legitimate guys trying to work up the ladder.

I myself had one hell of a time trying to find somebody to mount drag slicks (talk about liability concerns!), and ultimately mounted them myself at a friends shop on his tire changer. I had the same problem with my tires and wheels for Blackbird (17 inch Center Line alloys)... nobody would touch them, or they wanted my firstborn to mount and balance them, so I again did them myself. Most tire store work on normal "grocery getter" type cars with steel wheels and 14-15 inch tires, (read that as "easy and fast" to work on), and can't be bothered with something that remotely requires skill and/or hard work. I regard them as a "necessary evil" until the day I invest in my own equipment.

Other tires ....

I bought my GY GS-D3's from Discount Tire. It took a week to get them, as they were out of stock and had to get them from a warehouse in Lousianna. My only problem is they wore out too quick. My current set of tires I purchased from Tire Rack. I chose Sumitomos. I bought a full set for the price of a single pair of GY 315's for the rear. I feel they are every bit as good as the GY's. I have not used them for racing, but for everything else, they work great.

I was leary of buying from Tire Rack and having someone local install them, but gave it a shot. I have no complaints with Tire Rack. The local dealer that installed the tires overall was great. He was clearly aware of high performance cars, their owners, and their quirks. My only problem was that my wheels are powder coated white, and when I brought the car in, were heavily coated with brake dust. They used brake cleaner to clean a spot on the wheel for the stick-on weights. That worked fine, but anywhere they did not wipe off the dust after spraying, was stained by the dust. I did not notice the problem for a week or so because I parked the car in the garage and did not wash it right away. The only solution was to use the same brake cleaner and a rag to scrub it down and remove the stain. I then had to go over the wheel with polishing compound to restore the shine.

Both Discount Tire and the local dealer were very careful with the car, handling the wheels, and did not use an air impact on the lug nuts.
