Checking speakers?

My original am/fm radio doesn't work, but before I send it out to be fixed, I'd like to check the speakers to make sure that they work. Is there a way to test the speakers without pulling the dash apart, other than to remove the radio? I don't have a spare radio, but I was wondering if it's possible to probe the speaker wires with a multimeter. TIA

can't check the sound of them without a radio but you can check if they function at all by takinga 9v battery and putting the speaker leads to the battery. If the speaker works it will "pop" and push the cone forward or backwards depending on the polarity that you hooked it to the battery.

if it doesn't move the cone the speaker is dead, either a broken terminal lead or the windings inside by the magnet burned out.

Even if the speakers work by the battery, they may still be blown and sound like crap but you can't tell unless you play something thru them hooked to a radio

Using a volt/ohm meter and check the resistance from the speakers coil. It will at least check for an open. You will have to remove the right lower dash and the wiper switch to get to both pigs tails.

Checking Speakers

Thanks for the info. That's what i needed. I didn't want to send the radio off and pay $40 to have a tech open it and then find out the speakers are dead. I'm sure sound out of the speakers, if they work, will be pretty poor, but I can deal with that.
