After driving for a while my C5 develops a kind of clanking sound at idle which seems to come from the engine bay. Is this normal?

That is definitely not normal.

Have you opened the hood and listened to get a better idea of what part it is coming from?

No, but I will. I thought it was one of those idiosyncratic but "normal" Vette sounds. I does not sound ominous. Still I'll look under the hood.

probably is one of those normal noises. When you leave the vette in Neutral with the ebrake on it will sound like the throwout bearing is gone. This is normal.

Enjoy your vette!!:w

Actually I did check and the noise is not coming from the engine bay but from under the car, towards the rear wheels; perhaps it originates with the gearbox or the transaxle?
