cleaning alternators

What's the best way to clean an alternator? I tried soapy pressurized hot water with no luck. Aluminum wheel cleaner didn't help either. I heard oven cleaner would do a good job but I seem to remember that messing up things under the hood. Any helpful ideas out there?

I went to home depot and bought one of those polishing pads for a drill, and some polishing compund. That seemed to work well, but I was too lazy to take it off when I did it so only the top looks good =)
