Cleaning up an exhaust system?

Managed to get myself a used PowerEffects system today from a used-car dealer who had to remove it from a Vette he was selling (no cats on that car, wouldn't pass inspection). It's sound but dirty (some surface rust on the pipes to the power pods, lots of dust all over because it sat in the shop for a while). $300, a decent price given how dirty it was, I think. He wanted $500 originally, way too high.

Anyone have any good suggestions for cleaning it up and keeping it nice? The tips are in great shape, the pods just need some washing, but I'm a little concerned about the surface rust. I was considering just getting it powdercoated, but given its location under the car, hi-temp rustproof paint would be OK as well.

Thanks.

Rich, look through an Eastwood's catalog. They've got rust removers that are pretty good, and their business is polishing. ;)
