Clicking Noise

Question I noticed today when I went to back up a hill there was a distinct click from the passenger side rear wheel. The only time it does this is when you change directions from going forward to reverse. After you back up when go forward it clicks again. I am wondering if this is an early wheel bearing noise. The wheel baring on the drivers side rear was replaced before I bought the car. So what do the experts think? Cheers

A good way to check if it is the wheel bearings is to jack up the car and grab the wheel and shake it back & forth / up & down. There should be a little play but not
a lot. Are both rear wheels the same as far as play??

just talked with the former owner

sounds like your U-joints to me...
i just taled with the former owner he is a good guy and very knowledgeable he seems to think it is the posi clicking in and out and doesnt think it is a problem -- he seems to think at some point i will have to deal with it but said he always thought the rear end was bit loud but was working properly -- it only clicks once and then that is it i neaver hear it again -- cheers michael

I doubt that the wheel bearing could be causing this noise. I have a similar noise and have not been able to track it down. My noise is more of a clunk. In your case their could be play in one of the ujoints on the drive axle. Do you know when the last time the fluid was changed in the differential? Was limited slip addiditive added to it? I dont know if it could be differential noise, it is really hard to say.

Let all of us know

Rust in the splines were the spindle and the hub bearing assembly mate will cause "clicks". I had this too so I removed the rust from the splines and coated them with anti-seize compound. The click went away. If you think it's the u-joints, you can crawl under the rear of the car, spray some motor oil on the 4 half-shaft u-joints using a spray bottle. If it still does it, it's probably not the joints. As previously posted, there should be very little play, if any at the rear wheels with them off the ground. A loose spindle nut can also cause clunks and clicks, as well as play. The spindle nut needs to be torqued to 165 ft. lbs.

well it sounds like i am going to have to get under this puppy and paw around before i can give anyone decent feedback here -- i was hoping it was just the posi engaging -- i will let u know what i find -- thanks for the thoughts cheers michael

I have replaced the u joints on the drive shaft. Everything under the car has been checked by two different mechanics and I still can’t figure out what the clicks are all about. The half shafts all the bolts etc have been checked. All I know for sure is the click is coming out of the rear. It clicks once or twice backing up especially up a hill. Then it will click again when I go forward and sometimes between first and second. The trans is a 6 speed. Any thoughts?

I have had my car to a very good corvette shop. They had the car for about a week. Mechanically they said the car was great, and they wouldn't think twice about taking it on a road trip. The owner of the shop told me that there are some noises that are inherent to some cars. They did everything they could to figure out my noise, but was unable to. He told me to drive the car. Since I have had this noise for over a year now, with it not getting any worse I am going to drive it. What else can I do, after all they went through the whole car. All I know is that it is in the rear of the car. I have been driving it with no problems. So who knows. Drive it until something breaks:confused

Good luck
Craig
