Check the caliper bolts and make sure you didn't crossthread them. If they are they will feel tight but aren't. The pads also could be loose on the caliper. If they were so bad...how are the rotors? Is it the front or the back or both. Also did you use the cheapest pads you could find?

Is it a click.. or a big CLUNK

one time when you apply the brakes....

its just a clicking in just the front left and right and i bought 60 dollar metallic pads so there not cheap or anything

88 Front brake KLUNK

There are seperate spring clips that attach on to the pad..keeping the pad PUSHED to the leading edge of the caliper.

I put my 88 back together with out these clips
( didn't notice them when I removed my old ones)

and everytime I applied the brakes KLUNK

both sides

Yours might be a variant of the same deal.

Vig~
