On my 69, I've been fixing up the console and parts of the interior so... I ordered the "Clock knob kit" form one of the vendors in a case of the "While I'm at it"s.

On my dash, I have only a small metal piece sticking out from the gauge bezel. I assumed the knob would just fit right in. No luck. I have no idea whether it's broken or if I'm just a dope :hb

The kit is a 3 piece kit that looks as though it's universal so I only need 2 of the 3 pieces, the larger and the small piece that fits in the larger.

Can anyone explain it to me as though I'm a 2 year? If anyone has pics of their dash with it off and installed, that would be ideal I think.

Thanks for any help. ;help

Sly.

If the old knob is missing there are 3 possibilities:
1. The old knob was removed and lost.(new one should screw right on if it is the right size)
2. The old knob head was broken off leaving part still on the stem.(need to remove the remains of the old knob from the stem and screw the new knob on)
3.The stem broke off with the old knob.(You're screwed. You have to locate and figure out how to replace the stem as well as the knob)

Good luck and keep us updated.

Thanks for the help. I'm at work right now but later tonight I intend on looking at this in more detail.

The clock is intermittent anyhow, so if I have to replace it with a quartz alternative, so be it. Problem is, my dash is all in place. Hate to have the car in pieces. Up until last week, console and dash had been sitting disassembled for a month!

SLY, just my opinion, i would take the time to put the quartz kit in the clock . i spent a day getting my clock to work ,again. now it's working too good. i can't keep the clock from gaining time. by the end of the day it is 2 1/2 hrs fast.
so i will be making the change later..

DANN, thanks for that idea. backing up? do you mean winding backwards?

Try backing up 48 hours and see how much slower it runs per day (24hr. cycle). Adjust accordingly.

Ok let me see if this works. Ill back up my clock with a drill for 30 years, should make me 22 again, and I should have a prototype future vette. Hummm ????where did I store those bell bottoms at.

Now that I have thought it over a little maybe I better let the drill run a little longer if I want to break out the bell bottoms.

First on the knob...There are three pieces in a clock knob kit from Gm Two knobs and one "nut" ...You want the shorter knob in the kit the longer one was used in passenger cars....The Clock Shaft that sticks out has threads ...The knob slips on and the Nut goes in the middle and you screw it on.

On the "resetting" the clocks mechanism to correct the time,That Clock movement made by Borg did have this sytem built in however they never worked...The Idea was good the movement just never would do it.The original mechanical movements were designed to be maintained once a year and most never did...Unless you have your Vette judged(seriously judged) I recommend doing the quartz,Its accurate to a minute a year and life of it is indefinate.

Make sure the set stem has threads on it too...if they're messed up or have been broken off you're gonna need to replace the set stem and I'd send that job out.

If I can help in any way Email me

The original non quartz clocks in both my 63 and 69 work just fine. As C5D said, you can adjust the "speed" of the clock be advancing or retarding the time. The procedure should be in your owners manual. Chuck

WORE OUT 3 DRILLS and no improvement yet !!!!! Darn !!

Ok back to reality,,has anyone used the quartz repair kit that I see in the catalogs ? I see you can buy it already assembled or do it yourself. I was wondering if the do it yourself kit is the way to go or just buy it already done. My clock and battery meter has never worked and I was planning on replacing both.

D , I apologise if my question seemed stupid. i merely was making sure i was clear on the procedure.

Update

All that's left is a tiny bit of metal that appears to have been broken off at some point. I tried, tried again, and then some more... just to be sure. :( Nothin.

Anyways, looks like when I pull the bezel I'll be replacing the clock too... still undecided about the quartz. I think it'll come down to what comes my way in the next couple of months.

That bit about adjusting the clock... beautiful, never knew. Great piece of knowledge!
