Life's Good

Guest
I have had my '74 for a little over a month and the clock has moved 22 minutes. I didn't buy the car for the clock!

Just curious?? Any fixes?

I remember hearing that most of the older Vettes clocks don't function...now I know why!

I was never much for schedules anyway!

Thanks for the info, it was a great link...

The fella that did mine has it on ebay now (clock repair ) Look up item number
180152926257 on ebay. Mine works great in my 74 now. Anyone else looking for his service might took a look. Dave :beer

I used those directions on my cars clock a couple years ago now and my clock is still working flawlessly! Like the directions say, “MAKE SURE that what ever cleaner degreaser you use it is safe for plastics.”
If your clocks plastic housing has even the slightest look of tiny stress fractures I would not use ANY electrical cleaner at all no matter how safety approved it is for electronics. The spray cans propellant when released becomes VERY cold and if the clocks plastic housing is stress fractured the plastic will crumble and you will destroy your original clock. This is the only other advice I could add to these very good directions.

I bought the quartz conversion kit and wrapped up the project in a day. it maintains perfect time.

Unless originality is a concern, I'd go with a quartz replacement.

Oddly enough... the clock was one of the still functioning original components on my '80. Not sure how that happened- but it works great and keeps perfect time. Electrical components are such a mixed bag. Sometimes they work; sometimes they don't

There were only three places where the OEM harness had been cut- the stereo harness at the tape deck (which still had the 27 year old speakers until a week ago!), a courtesy light (which was used as a door pin switch for a car alarm), and then a splice under the hood by the HEI. Literally- those were the only cuts anywhere. For all the other things that weren't perfect (carpet, seat covers, etc) the electrical was one of the main reasons I bought her. I hate chasing down short circuits and electrical gremlins.

Contact Bill Harrison of Harrison Gauges & Speedomoter. He can easily rebuild you original and upgrade it to quartz if you want.

He's rebuilt two gauges and a clock for me (with conversion to quartz)... it keeps perfect time now! Bill's one of the best in the business! Quick work, keeps you informed, and fair prices.

His email is gldnkngt@adelphia.net. Tell him I sent you.

I did the quatrz as well, I had the dash all apart anyway. It took me about $60 and an hour.

I cleaned the clock in my '68, then ran a separate ground wire to it. It's been running ever since.
