Okay, I'm going to change out the clutch (I'm pretty sure that's what is wrong). I was talking to a guy about it and he said that there is a clutch kit that comes with the clutch, a new pressure plate, and new flywheel, along with the clutch aligning tool.

Where can I get this? And, I'm sure I need a specific clutch, etc., for my '78. How do I know which I need?

Thanks!

Does my '78 L48 take the 10.5" or the 11"? How can I find out which is stock?

Thanks, John! I was wondering when you were going to chime in. ;) See now I know for sure that it's an 11". You are the man, John. :D

Have no clue whether 10.5 or 11 ... I'd go w/ JohnZ or just measure once you've pulled it. There may be clutch kits that come with a flywheel (new or resurfaced) in the kit ... but I've never seen one. Just guessing but a new flywheel alone would probably go for at least $150. I've always taken the flywheel to an auto machine shop where they resurface it for under $50 ... usually good as new. As far as new parts, you'll need: clutch disc, pressure plate (aka cover) assembly, throwout (aka release) bearing and a pilot bearing/bushing. The alignment tool is also a must. If you use your old flywheel, also have its ring (starter) gear inspected closely ... a new gear can be pressed on by the machine shop.

Jon, I have no idea what the rear main seal looks like. Do you have a picture and an explanation maybe? That would be great.

Its a small rubber gasket that is around the crankshaft...its a 30 minute job with the bell housing off...Yours should be in two pieces. Seeing as your car is a 78...I'll bet it is close to need of a change.

It looks kinda like this one without the wire...

Check this print also for an idea where it goes.

All you need to do is drop the pan...remove the oil pump...the two nuts for the rear main cap and the rubber gasket slips around the crankshaft...Its one of those jobs where you might as well...it can also be done without dropping the tranny (Pre 1985 85 and up has one piece RMS have to drop the tranny)...Its just easier with it out.

Ah I see what you mean. I might as well, sounds like a good idea. I'll see when I get there. I'm just trying to get to the no-tranny point. ;)
