clutch ??

Hey guys, Dumb question # 1. When they talk about the 1" of free travel is that from the floor or when you step on the pedal. I am having growling noises with the clutch engaged and have made adjustment after reading the Haynes manual that wants me to back off the front nut all the way, then tighten 4 1/2 turns. This brings the pedal way out past the brake and the transmission doesn't engage until the pedal is almost all the way out. Thanks for being here for guys like me.:cool
