code 44 ????????????????????

I have a 90 L98. A code 44 (lean exhaust) appears in the SES. I replaced the O2 sen,cat and reset the the SES but no luck. The car at idle will run a little rought then all of the sudden it will smooth out and the SES will then come on and stay on and the engine will continue to run smooth. Why does the car idle smooth after SES comes on??????? Thank you. Input greatly appreicated. Ray

It runs smooth because it goes into a default mode which supplies a default amount of air/fuel mixture to the engine, which apparently is closer to right than what the computer is attempting to supply (too little fuel, apparently).

Do you have a GM service manual? If so, follow the flowchart for a Code 44, otherwise you're just guessing as to what the problem might be.
