contaminated fuel tank/clean or new?

;help My fuel tank on my 81 coupe is badly contaminated because the car sat for so long before I got it. My question is,,Can it be cleaned on or off the car or should it be replaced with a new one with lines,etc? Where is the best place to order a new one? If it can be cleaned,, what is the best cleaner and where can I get it?,,,,,,,,,,:BOW ,,Ed

I just had the tank on my '71 referbished. Most tanks can be cleaned and referbed. However, I only saved about $100 getting it redone over buying a new one. The inside will be a nasty yellow as well with the referb, because they have to recoat the inside of it. Your call.

on a similar topic, i have the same prob, but lesser degree..... i took off the sender unit and water got in there, how can i get all the fuel out? i siphoned of course but i want to add a "plug" on the bottom to where i can make a feed line...... how can i make the hole in the tank without a: removing the tank, b: blowing myself up bya a spark of a drill? i wanna keep my current tank as it is still very good........ but would consider getting a new one.... where can one go to get a new one?

fuel tank woes

Hey Tony,,, Welcome to gas tank woes.net My research and the advice of some members have come up with the following info.
1978-82 vettes have bladder tanks. They have not yet started to produce replacement tanks. Therefore,, we have to do the best we can with what we got. My plan is to remove the tank, remove the sending unit, remove the bladder ( if it is still intact) clean it and the tank. Reseal the tank ,install new fuel lines to the pump and pray:BOW Thanks,,Ed
