im putting in all urethane bushings for my 81 front end, but i am having a bit of trouble with the control arm bushings. I was able to get the old rotted rubber bushings out with no problems, however, the metal casing for the bushings just wont come out of the control arm. I have read some suggestions that the old casings can be used with the new urethane bushings, but since the new bushings came with their own casings it seems like that isnt the way its meant to be. Is there any advantage to getting the old casings out and putting the new ones in, and if so how should i do it?

Thanks,
Gene

Take the control arm to a good shop and have the old bushings carefully pressed out(dont want the control arm to get tweaked doing this).
The new urethane bushings wont need to be pressed in they are more of a slip fit than the oem rubber bushings.

CA bushing casings ... aka "shells". If you're going polyurethane ... and you've gotten all the old rubber out ... and your old outer shells are not damaged ... there is no advantage in replacing the outer shells. With finger-pressure, just pop out the poly bushing & inner shells from your new assemblies ... set aside the new outer shells. With plenty of lube & finger-pressure ... insert the new bushing & new inner shell into your old outer shell. Save yourself time & money while eliminating risk of bending/tweeking CA during pressing. I did it as I recommend & there was/is no problem ... many others had same success, both before & after mine. Regardless if you use your old shells or not ... if you're using polyurethane bushings here's a safety tip: clean female threads at ends of CA shafts real well with spray brake cleaner ... same for mating retaining bolts ... absolutely no grease/shmutz in there ... use a dab of loctite.

After a long time not being able to work on the car (my darn job) i think i am now almost ready to finish putting the cas back in
