conveter life span,..?

i assume that there is one...but hate to blow bucks for no apparent reason(personal history notwithstanding)
if replacement is indicated is there one that flows better than the rest..?

I've seen them last anywhere 50,000-500,000 miles!!Just depends on how well the vehicle has been maintained!!

That's not being vague, it's the truth. There is no time/mileage interval on a conveter, they will last a very long time with no physical damage and proper engine tune.

I vaguely recall reading somewhere that they are SUPPOSSED to last at least 80K. I also recall something in one of the owner's manuals about if it didnt that a FREE replacement was available from manufacturer...but not sure if time is a factor in that equation.
I am failry sure that it's "illegal" under federal law to replace one unles it NEEDS replacement. But I dont think anyone REALLY takes it seriously. So technically replacing a functioning one with a free flow converter is illegal. One shop I "heard of" puts down that it failed emissions. There have been a lot of thefts lately for the precious metals in the Cats and are somewhat valuable.
Btw, There are some really nice stainless steel free flow units out there at Summit. An 84 which only needs the one cat is about $175.
