Question: re: fuel injectors
I started my "91" Vette last sunday, which had been running great, and it stopped running. I was able to pull off the highway. Trying to restart it resulted in the car "chugging" and then completely shutoff. I had it towed to a close by Chevy dealer. They've diagnosed the problem as being in the fuel injector system which would require replacing all fuel injectors and somehow ruined the plugs in the process. The mechanic explained that one of the injectors may have gone bad and caused the others to go due somehow to the ECM system. He said one of the injectors got "hot" and ruined the others through the computer. The car had been sitting for two hours before I started it so I can't understand how anything could have been "hot". Can anyone relate to this and tell me why it's going to cost three thousand dollars to have the work done. The car has only 33K miles and has been pampered it's whole life.
Thanx

I don't have any explanation as to why this happened, but it sounds exactly like what happened to my 91 C4.

So the service writer at the dealership tells me that I need new fuel injectors.

"How much?", I ask.

"$200.", he says.

"Great!" I say "Go ahead and put in a new set"

"That's $200 EACH!" he said.

Fortunately my dealer is very willing to work with me when it comes to supplying my own parts with, of course, no guarantee. There's lots of places that sell aftermarket fuel injectors. I bought a set of 24 lb. Accel injectors from Jegs for $270, but I just read about a place called FIC that sells remanufactured injectors for about $170. Funny thing is they have a better warranty than the brand new ones from Accel!

Here is a link to the ones from FIC: http://fuelinjectorconnection.com/shop/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=134

Good luck!

This sounds remarkably like stealership BS to me....

These injectors are simple, yet tough. I had a short in one bank yrs ago that resulted in the whole side staying "hot" and open for some time. The result was gallons of gas wasted and flooding the engines crankcase. Thing was, once the short was fixed the injectors were fine.

I can see an ECM fault,. but to say that the entire set was damaged? how? they see voltage pulses several times a second and do this for millions upon millions of cycles. Its just a solenoid.

Changing injectors is not that difficult. Finding a reasonable price for new ones is not either.
I'd haul it away from the dealership and find a legitimate shop to test, diagnose and give a solid price for the repairs. Replacing a set of 8 injectors? $600.
Injectors cost as little as $40 each, elsewhere.
Good Luck.

The mechanic explained that one of the injectors may have gone bad and caused the others to go due somehow to the ECM system.
One bad injector ( electrically ; short etc ) will cause the ECM to shut that whole bank down , it would not torch the others.
If it was a short on the supply side the injector fuse(s) will blow .Did you check injector fuses?

Injectors cost as little as $40 each, elsewhere.

$170 a set from Jon at FIC in links above .
Rave reviews across all the C4 Forums :thumb

I just installed these yesterday:
Corvette, Camaro, Firebird, GTO Only - L98 CORVETTE, CAMARO, F'BIRD - 1986-1992 Corvette, Camaro Pontiac T/A Bosch Design III 22lb Fuel Injector - Fuel Injector Connection

Talk about a night and day difference. If you still have Multecs do yourself a favor and get rid of them and go with the above link.

I echo this. I replaced all with FIC Bosch III's when ethanol fuel ate my Multecs. Car runs just great now after inexplicably dying with no warning.
