Hello -I could really use some help here -I have a '72 bryer blue with blue interior -color codes are 945 and 412 respectively. I just procured the interior paint I thought was correct only to notice (after I got to far along) -that the color does not match !

Needless to say I am pretty frustrated. Both the two big corvette after market suppliers carry the same color dye. The color is stated as 68, 71-72 medium blue. It is way off.

I even called this one company and specifically asked if that was the 72 interior color for blue -they assured me it was. Well, it aint.

I made the mistake of painting several trim and seat backs (after hours of prep and prime) before I noticed the colors were no where near the same.

Does anyone know why or anything about this?

Is 72 a mystery paint color year?

sigh...........

I have an identical problem with a '72 red interior. I too have tried supposedly the "correct" red interior dye for code 407 interior. Both dyes are way too red, the original color has more orange in it. So I have the same question, who's dye is closest to the real thing. Or would I have better luck taking one of the interior parts to a automotive paint store and having them match the color?
Thanks,
Mike

Just a thought:
Could the original color on both of your cars faded so much over the years that the "correct" color seems incorrect?

I used the Corvette America dye on parts of my '70 and it matches well, but then again my interior's black so fading is less of an issue.

Best of luck,
Vince

Another thought:
Maybe a previous owner redyed the interior incorrectly.

Hey Vinn did you do any scuffing or did you just clean prime and paint?

Vince -that is a good point. Hard to say if fading is a factor. I did ponder that a possible dye change was made some time in the cars life -but hard to tell -that is, I've examined it closely in my retoration efforts -both of these could be possibilities. I know the seats were redone about 16 years ago and the dye I purchased matches those -but you know how GM is, the entire interior is a consortium of lights and dark hues i.e. the door panels match the dash -but the hand-brake cover is another color as are the seats and some of the plastic trim.

I am now trying to find out what color 412 is supposed to be.

thanks for the help.

Hi Joe,

I did some scuffing with 320 grit sandpaper -then lightly wiped down with laquer thinner. After that -I primed with Krylon. Now contemplating a Krylon clear coat.

Yep -that's my main problem also: The new dye is way to much deep blue -I don't want to redo the entire interior mainly because I don't want to mess with the original color.

frustrating :(

Joe,
I did not do any scuffing, and in fact, I only primed some of the pieces I coated. I was afraid the thick primer would permanently alter the texture on the plastic parts of the interior, so these I just cleaned very well, then dyed with several thin coats. A good cleaner or alcohol works well for this. I just did this last winter, so I am not positive how they will stand the test of time, but for now they look great.

Metal parts on the other hand, I sanded, primed, then dyed. Hope this helps!

Vince
