Crank shaft pulley noise

I was investigating what I thought was a noisy water pump. I took off the serpintine belt to ensure that it was the water pump and the noise was still present. Come to find out the noise is comming from the crank shaft pulley. The noise is not always present, it comes and goes in different degrees of pitch. Any ideas???

Engine Noise

Reference to your noise upon starting up the engine, I have a 85 Vette and had a noise upon first starting up and then after a while it would get diminer and finally almost go away, found out that the fly wheel bolts were loose, tightened them up and she runs like a vette should. Just a though. Doc

I suspect the harmonic damper may have slipped. It happened to my stock L-98 and I had a minor vibration problem that I couldn't figure out, then when I pulled the engine I found it. You should be able to tell if it has slipped back (or forwards, but usually backwards towards the timing cover) just by looking.

I took a closer look at the balancer tonight. It appears that it has slipped and the outer portion has moved to the rear. Thanks for the help. Does anybody have the correct GM pat number for a replacement balancer? Thanks again for all the help.
