Crosssfire Function Issue

Odd issue, 82 completely stock will only start and run with fuel pump fed power directly from 12v source. Once started you can then quickly re-connect the harness and it will continue to run. I've gone through all the parts that I can think of but am stuck. Voltage is good, brand new battery, fuel pump relay checks out. Anybody got an idea that I haven't thought of?

sounds like the relay has gone bad.its supposed to run the pump for a few seconds,prior to putting the key in the start position.
when you turn the key on,you should hear the pump run.and once it has stopped,start the vette.
