cylinder bore

does anyone have a place with a good article about what goes into boring cylinders and all the other stuff required??

I belong to a few other forums and on one of them they are talking about this but aren't hitting the nail on the head so I would like to give them some real info, any help would be greatly appreciated.
 
I don't know how far north of philly you are but a trip to a machine shop would be educational. Two I remember are
Speed equipment (215-638-0300)in Bensalem Pa. and one off Spruce street in Trenton NJ either on 4th or 5 th street I can't remember the name of altho I took all my machine work to him when I lived in NJ
 
bossvette : I would love to take a trip to a machine shop but I think I would rather wait until I have a job and a car to actually have bored out. :upthumbs With my intent in life I will probably spend enough at a machine shop to own the place(if I get the oppertunities that I want)

I would like to start with A car before I even consider putting a few grand into one.

c5d the first like doesn't work but the second one is pretty cool.

when having an engine bored out what else would someone need?

pistons
rings
possibily connecting rods
balanced/machined crank(if going for it all at once)
new heads??? or just machined
 
Usually along with boring for bigger pistons and rings you would Square the Deck(where the heads mount) and for a "blueprint" Machine it to a specific size or Deck height. Clean up any casting imperfections and flash that you find, grind any clearance needed for the stroker crank and rods if you are going that route. The bores are finished by honing. the hot setup is to use a plate torqued down to simulate the heads being on the block.
I personally do all the grinding before I send it to the machine shop so when they boil it (hot tank) the junk is cleaned out.
Keep trying Ds link it worked for me.

other parts you will need are gaskets freeze plugs and cam bearings I prefer to replace the oil pump with a Melling HVHP and use new rod and main bolts

your local Chevrolet Dealer has a "Power Catalog" which Details engine building there is a high performance Parts catalog also but you want the Power Catalog it is more instruction book then a "Catalog"
