Dash pad redo

I am replacing the lower left side dash pad on my 1977. I do not know how to remove the head light switch from the old pad. Can anyone help me with this? Does the knob screw off the shaft or does the whole shaft come out? The knob and shaft seem like one peice I do not want to twist the knob to hard in fear or breaking the switch. Do I need a special tool to remove the nut? ;help

The knob does not twist off, it comes off in one piece with the shaft.

On the switch assembly itself there is a small button that will release the shaft once pushed.
