I just bought a 97, which has the Cassette player only - no CD or CD changer. Is it correct that I can hook the GM 12 disc changer to the Delco cassette player? Also, If I decide to change the Delco cassette player for a Delco C5 in-dash CD player, is it a simple swap? Has anyone out there done this? Anything to watch out for? I know many of you will recommend installation of an aftermarket CD player, but I want to keep the car all GM (call me crazy!). Any thoughts or suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks!!

Hey Green,

I have, from the factory, an in dash cassette radio, and the 12 disc in the back. So I would say it would work in yours also. The wiring might even be in the car. I don't know if they would have seperate harnasses with and without. I'll keep an eye on this post as I would like to change to a CD player up front. It gets to be a pain to change CDs. You can't change them on the fly while driving.

I have seen both on Ebay at a reasonable price.

97 12 Disc Changer

I am doing some research into this, to make sure which part numbers work in which years. There are some differences in compatability. Once I run this into a corner, I will post my findings. Anyone else out there with information on this? Does anyone out there have a 97 with cassette and 12 disc changer? If so, can you post the Delco part number on the changer???

I am going to do the exact same thing to my 98. And I already tested it using the CD head unit from my Monte. The back of both units are virtually identical except that one had an extra plug so it was plug-n-play. Now I'm shopping for a CD head unit for the Vette.

Aww geez, it just dawned on me that I didn't make sure the changer still worked. The head unit worked though. Guess I'll be doing it all over again:eyerole.

I have an 04 Commemorative Conv. with 12 disk changer in trunk(factory) and cassette/radio in dash. I can't believe that in this day and age they actually give you a cassette player. I asked the dealer how much it would cost to swap out the cass/radio for a cd/radio and they told me if I did the 12 dick changer in trunk would not work. Anyone know if this is true?

If either of you have a 97-98 with a non Bose system, then there is only one Delco CD head unit which will work and it requires a wiring change, as well. Once installed correctly, it will also work with the remote changer, if the car has the correct factory connections in the passenger footwell.

That is pure fabrication. He does not know his product. Talk to the Service Manager.
