Distributor end float?

I've just reasembled the distributor out of my L48, having replaced the main shaft and tach drive gear. When I stripped it down there was about 1/4 inch axial float in the shaft. I assumed that there should be some shims between the drive gear and the base of the distributor casting, so I've shimmed it to less than 1/16 float.

Here's my question: how much float should there be, and I have left enough or too much?

I think stock is around .010" or so. 1/16" is way too much.
