Door Spring Installation Tool

I have to replace a worn out drivers door hinge spring on my 73 vert. I have the "S" shaped spring and borrowed the installation tool from a friend. The tool looks like a large common screwdriver that is bent. My friend replaced his spring about ten years ago and forgot how to do it. Does anyone know the procedure, (top first or bottom first). Does anyone have the directions that they could scan and E-mail to me? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Joe.

JRVETTE, where do you get the tool normally? I have the same problem on my drivers side on the '81. The door seems to sage too. Keep me posted on your luck. I've put a few hours in getting mine installed, I just can't do it. I've read the diagrams, printed the pictures, and still just can't get it in. (yeah, I know sounds like a personal problem, but she usually helps me, )

I had problems doing mine as well, with the screwdriver I bent not strong enough for the job. To make a long story short, I eventually bent the spring ever so slightly, but enough that it wouldn't go in the lower hole.

I ended up paying someone to do it, who straightened the spring and used a small crowbar against the door (place a rag between the door and bar) and twisted the spring over far enough to get it in. This is different than the tool, which goes in between the top of the S and when you push it to the center of the car twists the spring.

The actual tool can be bought from any of the vendors and will end up costing you about $20 with shipping.

The tool made the job quick and simple. I thought the $20 would be a waste ofmoney, but it was worth it.
