Doughnut on a C5?

I saw a C5 parked with a doughnut spare tire on it.

As I need to replace my run flats, I was thinking of non run flats. I was told that having a run flat repaired needs a special machine.

Does anyone here not use run-flats and carry a doughnut? What car has one that would fit a C5?

I don't know for sure, but, since the front and rear are different diameter, you wouldn't be able to have one doughnut to handle both. It may be that the difference isn't enough to be dangerous, but I don't know. In any event, I have never heard of anyone doing it.

You will either have to carry two sets of spare space saver tires - one for the front and one for the rear; or take the approach that the Z06 does and take along a fix-a-flat kit and air compressor. If you have a flat, the fix-a-flat goop will ruin the air pressure sensors. Flat tires are definitely not a fun event.

No need for a donut spare. I just carry a small compressor (high volume, not high pressure), a plug kit, and a small Mercedes jack. The Michelin Pilot Sport are much quieter and better wet & dry handling than the run-craps.

I can't wait to get rid of my run flats. And get some real tires. I already have the compressor and plug kit because I got a flat in the runflats and nobody around here wanted to touch them. So I fixed it with a plug last year and it's been great. So regular tires for me once these are toast.

Careful with the plug kits. If by plug kit, you are describing a kit that has a screwdriver-like tool that you use to push in a plug that is supposed to seal the hole that has caused the flat, you are damaging the body of the tire and the tire's speed rating will not apply. The only repair that retains the tire's speed rating is that where the tire is removed from the rim and a patch is glued to the inside of the tire where the hole that caused the flat is located.

This is very good advise. I had both rears patched at different times because of deck screws picked up in the exact center of the tire (maybe I have an unknown enemy). The tire center that had equipment to handle the big wheels and run-flats would not plug a performance tire.

Going to the extreme, in my opinion, Brumos Porsche (75 miles from me), which runs Porsche's racing in the US, won't patch a tire. Get a nail; get a new tire.

No doughnut here...just have 800 miles on the runflats so far...but I do like Krispy Creme doughnuts....:)

If you remember the doughnut spare from the C4 it was a 17 inch tire that was very narrow. The spare is not meant to replace a punctured tire, only to get you to the nearest tire place to get a repair or replacement so you didn't have a full sized spare. The well in the trunk area of the car was originally designed in to support a spare tire that was later removed from the design. Just keep in mind that there is currently no hardware there to fasten a spare tire/jack to in the trunk.

We run non-runflats on the 99 and I've toyed with the idea of removing the spare from the '95 to lighten it up a bit. Careful with the fix-a-flat stuff and the tire pressure sensors. I can't remember the last time I actually used a spare tire or had a flat. I've had small leaks that have needed to be repaired but nothing that needed to use of a spare.

You may also wait until the C6 gets out and about. I suspect that Goodyear will offer the next gen EMT tires from C6 in C5 sizes and these are supposed to be better performing and quieter tires.

I plug the tires when needed. Never had a problem

Of course I don't run track days after .

Just make sure you have AAA. I Have Toyo Proxies, they're quiet as a mouse and have great traction. I HAVE NO SPARE. Guess I live on the wildside...Iam going to carry that 17" spare that the c4s have in the future, hopefully before i get my first $%#@

Well, if you replace the front wheels with 18s you can get around the offsets.

I have heard of people doing this before, but I am not sure who has on the CAC.

I would think you will need to have the computer re-programed to cover the offset.
