outside driver door handle

71's door handle broke . I got it out and have a new handle. Any install suggestions or dissasters I need to avoid to re - install the handle ????

Take the three screws out that hold the latch mechanism and let it drop, makes it much easier to attach the rear door handle nut.
Goood advice only I would remove the latch, clean it with brake cleaner, lube install the handle and adjsut the throw.
Also if you're using a vendors import handle don't expect a good fit or long life. The GM handles were still avail last I checked but they're over $100 compared to the $25-$40 imports. You do get what you pay for.

After removing the outer handle , I realized the cluster fork you'd be in if the door insisted on staying closed. I sprang for the OEM handle $100 . I checked the latch mech several times , worked fine. Cleaned the latch with brake cleaner and it FAILED . If I'd put this latch into the vette and closed the door -- Good luck in getting the door open. New OEM latch = $440 . Will Not use taiwan/china crappola on the door [or anywhere]

What happened with the latch? Usually they work much better cleaned and lubed?

The lock assy broke . There is no detailed pix of the assy in the AIM. It is in UPC1 K7 [doors] Item 5 . The spool tab which translates the motion from both the inner and outer handles to the latch release broke, making the handle inop.

THIS IS NOT CORRECT ! I mistook the lock/unlock modes because the latch was so hard to open. After cleaning with brake cleaner I could not get the latch to open . Getting old and not as strong as long ago . Anyway prior to cleaning it opened easily and I didn't check the unlock mode so when it would not open in either position of the lock I Assumed it was broke. When I got the new latch the lights went on

Here is a picture of my door handle I got out last night. Notice that it is missing a lot. Seems to have had a catastrophic failure.

That handle [drivers' side, right?] is a clone of how mine broke. Exact. Two drain holes I'm guessing an origional part

Yep, driver's side original handle. Big time broke, deciding now on replacement.
