Driver Headlight Bumper Stop Issue

Problem: The "Down" bumper stop on the drivers side of my 2000 will break off every 2-4 weeks causing the headlight unit not to stay in the down position, and to pop up about half way. I believe the arm is hitting the stop with to much force and breaking it. I have been replacing the bumper stop and the issue keeps returning. I have probably gone thru about 6 of the white plastic stops.

History: The problem started when I needed to replace the stripped plastic gear of the headlight motor. I replaced it with the brass gear.

Question: Is there a preset position to be in when I replace the stop. If you manually turn the knob on the motor clockwise without a stop in place, the headlight unit will continue to cycle up and down.

Thanks for any advise.

I found this link, refer to Post 18

C5 Headlight bumpers - Corvette Forum

The motor is supposed to stop by increased current draw being monitored by the headlight control module. No limit switches. I am surprised to hear when the "down" bumper breaks the headlight goes to the half way up position.

I have never worked on the headlight assemblies, just done diagnostics on the electrical system for people. The FSM was no help, I looked.

I also found this link for a guy who makes the brass gear and makes a "tougher" bumper stop that may be your solution. Suggest you contact him.

Please let us know what happens or if I can be of any more assistance. Mr. Sam
