i have my dash off for an interior overhaul......there is a small "box" with fins like a stereo amp.....it about 4 to 5 inces long with a round componet in the middle that has a delco marking on it...it is mounted to the firewall area in the upper right (pass) corner.....there is 3 wires coming out of it with about 3 feet of length and a 3 prong connector on it....what ever it is , its not plugged into anything....im thinking it may have something to do with the factory alarm it came with...it dont seem to work. when i turn the key , it just sounds the alarm.does this ring a bell with anybody out there? i dont have a digital camera or i could post a pic. thanks :s

vettedude73,

I have the exact same thing in my shark, I though at first it was an after market amp. Or a really big heat sink for an early 70ish cpu :)

But seriously I have searched the AIM and havent found out what it is, I have since put the passenger side dash back on, but am more then willing to take it off again to snap a pic if one is needed.

Someone please enlighten us :L

A photo would be very helpful...

Thanks!

If you give the colors of the three wires coming out I don't think it would be too hard to trace it down one a wiring diagram (hopefully) :L

i will post the colors tomorrow...thanks

Not being an electronics expert, I can't tell you the "exact" name of that device, BUT it is part of the optional AM FM Stereo radio package. AM FM mono radios do not have that device. I've heard it referred to as a rectifier, a splitter, and an amplifier. They are not present in non-stereo cars. If you look in your Assembly Manual, in the rear "options" section, probably U58 or U79 or something in the "U" section, you'll see that "gizmo" and its' wiring. Chuck

THANK YOU!

many thanks chuck.:BOW

As ChuckG mentioned, that's part of the original FM stereo system. The round things in the extruded heat sink are power transistors.

Thanks much for the photos, they really helped!

Thats great news... seeing as how I no longer have the 8 track ;) or audio devices. I guess it can come out now that I have taken off the pad again :)

That what I love about this car, just when you put something back on you get to take it off again and remove something else... weeeeee :J

great pics billybob.....mine is coming out this weekend.thanks for the help guys.:beer

It's part of the power amp for the stereo. As someone mentioned earlier, those round thingys are power transisters and they produce quite a bit of heat in operation. Heat = death to a transister, therefore the big aluminum heat sink surrounding them. It you do not plan to use the original stereo, you might want to put this on E-bay.

For questions about the '73 Vette, just check out The '73 Spot. Link below. If you did you would have found this page:

http://www.corvetteforum.net/c3/vette73/radio.htm

under "Technical Info" and found that those things are the Heat Sink on the mono radio or the Multiplex Assembly and Heat Sink on the stereo radio. The stereo radio is basicly a two part unit with the head unit and the multiplex assembly.
